I asked hubby to stop off on way home from work last night to get Carefresh bedding and some more hay for our newish piggies.

Naughty man came home with woodshavings!!

Should I be ok to use them just for a one off (have been using newspaper and hay, but they are now outside that the weather has warmed up here in Cornwall) - even though a huge bag - till it has finished as I've seen dodgy reports on the shavings being bad for their health?

Thanks.

its more dusty shavings that can be bad for respiratory system. If its the dust free kind you should be fine. To be honest there will be people on here that will tell you under no circumstances to keep them on woodshavings but then there are others that can quote an equal number of reasons not to use what ever other type of bedding is available. I keep Buddy on shavings as he much prefers it to the fleece my herd are on

I've never used them but have heard it can affect/irritate their respiratory systems - could you not exchange them for Carefresh ? My boys thought Carefresh was an extra tasty snack so had to stop using that as well :)
Your hubby meant well but just needs a few lesson in 'piggy slavery' :(|)

I use lots and lots of newspaper and then woodshavings underneath a really thick layer of hay. I've never had any problems with shavings, the ones I get are really large curls of wood so theres hardly any dust but I know other people with sensitive piggies have. Its your choice :)

Thanks Lady Kelly - yes, it is the dust extracted kind from the well known large chain of pet stores.......

I shall go ahead and use it - tbh, I can't just nip out to replace and have cleaned their hutch out - just had a first-time mommy wobble!!

Yep, I'll put some paper down first as before, then the shavings and then they love a really deep layer of hay to snuggle in........I can but try and do need to finish the hutch off now that I've cleaned it all out! :))

Ha ha - Snowy & Lightening like to eat anything too! Difficult to know whats best I guess, but I will suck it and see for now and can always change the bedding for something else when this bag runs out.

I use woodshavings in a litter tray where they can do poops (of course they don't but sometimes wee there) so you don't have to use them all over the cage if you get something else in due course, nor do you have to waste them.
