hello,

I have a three year old guinea pig Harvey. Two years ago he had a done sized sore that we treated for mites. Today I noticed three very very small scabs on his back. One of them were red. I will call the vet and make an appointment tomorrow, but could it be mites again even if we treated him with the antibiotics? Why does he keep having this problem? He is very healthy and has a clean cage. His bonded mate Theodore never had this problem. Could it be something else?

All guinea pigs have mites in their skin. It is normal, and a healthy pig keeps them at a non detectable level.
However sensitive or stressed guinea pigs can experience an outbreak of mites.

This is not a terrible thing, and correctly diagnosed and treated is easily dealt with.
It is great you have a vet appointment.
Hopefully with the correct, prescribed treatment this out break will be dealt with quickly.

Thank you so much for your reply.

he seems like a very happy guinea pig and has everything. Do you think he’s just sensitive to it? Something he’s just more proned to?

Was he diagnosed with hay or mange mites the last time? All the best and hopefully whatever it is is easily treated.
