Hi

My 3 week old Guinea pig has a bald patch under his eye, it's scaly and crusty, although he doesn't appear to be scratching it as much as I'd expect.

I took him in to my vets......who we're reluctant to give a diagnosis or treatment but hinted towards Mites/Ringworm, she said she would makes some enquiries and contact me....she's just phoned and said as he is so young treatment is limited but they could do skin swabs for analasis and go from there. I must admit, I'm reluctant for a variety of reasons.....

Does anyone else have any experience in treating baby pigs for mites?

Advice greatly appreciated.

Probably might be mites :( Is there not a very low dose of ivermectin the vet could give

Hi
That is what I would have expected.... I'm going to try and take him for a second opinion tomorrow. I just didn't feel confident the vet knew any more than I did.

Certainly didn't sound like they did :-\ Pretzel had mites below her eye when I got her, so they can start anywhere. She was over 12 weeks though so could have ivermectin

Gps over the age of 3 weeks can be given Ivermectin, but it must not be given by the oral route.Inj.or topical is safe.

He may have an infection or scratch to the eyeball. When my gp had an ulcer in the eye the fur underneath the eye fell out and went scabby. Hope you find out the cause.

Going to see a different vet at 4.30 today so hopefully we may get somewhere today. ;)

yeah I am sure that chrissie from Gorgeaus Guineas does a shampoo for young piggies, could it be conjunctivitis if its under the eye? :embarassed:

Not convinced it's conjunctivitus..............eyes are perfectly clear and clean. I'm sure it's a mite problem... hopefully this vet this arvo will be slightly more piggy savvy!

Saw a great vet today.... diagnosed Mites and Barney had an Ivermectin jab and will have a second jab in a weeks time.

7 days is too soon for the 2nd jab.It needs to be 14 days to kill off any mites that may have hatched after the 1st jab.
