Hello,
I have a question about mites-
Ivermectin has failed getting rid of mites on my guinea pigs (they still scratch a lot) so the vet suggested stronghold.
We have a lot of wooden hideys and bridges and before we start the treatment we will clean everything.
But also the cage I have made is made of wood and plexiglass

What is the best way to make sure that mites are killed off completely?
I know we have to wash the fleece at 60 degrees, but what about the wooden stuff? I tried to bake them for a bit last time when I was treating them for mites with ivermectin, not sure it worked.
Can we freeze the hideys? If so, for how long?
Thanks!

If you can get hold of F10 per grade cleaner then you can soak the wooden items in that, and also use it to clean the cage. How long was the treatment and how many doses were they given?

The treatment with ivermectin had been 4 weeks, 4 doses.(1 per week) .I don't think I can get hold of the disinfectant like right now . An admin on the guinea pig forum on fb suggested I bake the wooden stuff for an hour at 90 C. Would that be enough? Also warm soap and water for the whole cage? The stronghold dosage would be once for the whole month.

In the case of skin parasites, a thorough clean and good rinse with a normal small pet cleaner or soap is enough. I have never heard of the baking houses in the oven method.

if you are dealing with hay mites (chirodiscoides caviae), then these come usually with industrially harvested international hay brands. Can you source hay more locally? I would in this case strongly recommend that you get rid of the current hay bag.

In the case of mange mites, guinea pigs often carry the eggs in the skin. ivermectin can only kill the emerging mites, not the protected eggs. Normally a fully operating immune system can keep the mite eggs under control. they tend to make an emergence only when the immune system is lowered for a reason (stress, illness, young and old age, pregnancy or sometimes a bereavement). 3 applications of the ivermectin at the product specific interval should make sure that you catch and kill off all emergencing mites.

It looks like mange mites. The hay I buy is dust extracted and pretty expensive, it also comes in small bags. I wish we could source local hay, it would be way cheaper too.

I am not sure why ivermectin didn't seem to work. I double checked the dosages according to kilos etc. But the scratching didn't stop.
I will be trying stronghold , also will ask the vet about a hospital/pet grade disinfectant and we will see.
Thanks you.
