JUst wondered if anyone has tried mite sprays on there piggies i found 2 types bob martin and johnsons mite and lice spray has anyone tried them and do they work x

i wouldn't use a spray on or near the piggies, they have a delicate respiratory system and i wouldn't want to risk them inhaling something they shouldn't :-\ couldn't you use spot on maybe? or see a vet :-\

No and they both contain compounds which are potentially very harmful to pigs. It's a shame they're still being sold.

The only thing that should be used on mites is ivermectin.

johnsons bird anti mite is really good at killing off running lice, use this if you dont have access to ivomec,my friends who show thier gps have used it for well over 20yrs with no ill effect

Ivermec will not kill lice, only mites. I would not touch any of Johnsons stuff,it has too many chemicals.

Neem or Tea tree based shampoos will get rid of lice.

just remember that ivomec is not licenced for use on guineas, this means it has not been tested on them, having said that i have used it for many years and not had any trouble.

Most vets will agree that ivermectin is the best treatment there is for mites and there are now several spot on versions of ivermectin licensed for use in guinea pigs.

Ivermectin, unlike the chemicals in these sprays generally isn't inhaled. Pyrethrins (the active ingredient in the sprays) have been shown to cause skin irritation in cavies along with neurological problems in other species of rodent, some of which led to death. If you would like the references, search on the GL forum where they were posted.
