Hi,

I'm new here and new to having guinea pigs. I got 2 boys about 3 weeks ago and they are 10 weeks old. They were scratching quite a lot so after reading online I put a dose of "spot on" based on their weight. 2 weeks on they are still scratching a lot. I have managed to take them out and have a good look today and it looks like tiny black dots right down to the skin. I've managed to get a photo but it's not the best, can anybody advise me what they are and the next steps? Thank you.

Oops, I am having trouble uploading a photo. If anyone can advise based on what I've described or advise how to post a photo that would be fab!

You need to get them to the vet so they can get the correct dosage of treatment. We don’t advise home treatment - those over the counter meds are not the correct strength and you don’t know what exactly it is.

If it is mites then one treatment isn’t enough. I hope they’re better soon.

Hi!

Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis and correct treatment; it is ultimately less expensive to do it properly instead of ending up at the vet after weeks of cheap pet shop stuff used on spec. Pet shop products are generally too low dosed to cut through an acute outbreak.
