Hi, first time poster and guinea pig owner here, please help!

I was mis sold a cage from PAH, they said it would be big enough for my 2 boars all of their life but it doesn't even meet rspca minimum standards!

I'm in need of a new indoor cage/hutch but can't find what I'm looking for online. I don't have space for a 5ft length cage. I was thinking of a 4ft × 3ft cage or a 3ft × 3ft cage. Would this size be suitable? If so, where can I get one from? I've googled it and can only find long cages, not square ones.

If anyone has one that they are selling please let me know.

Thanks
Natasha

Definitely look into a c&c cage. They are fantastic and you would be able to make it square if that Is what would fit your space. They are measured in grids rather than feet measurement though, so just double check size if you order. So if you see someone talking about a 2x5 c&c cage, then it means 2 grids wide by 5 grids long, not 2ft x 5ft. When I got my c&c for my two boars, I originally had it as a 2x4 but quickly found it wasn’t quite enough space for them so I changed it to a 4x4 - that is a flexibility that c&c offers.
With boars, you need to give them the biggest amount of space that you possibly can (generally boars need more room than sows). If you have space for a cage measuring 4x3ft (12sq ft of space), then that will be better than a 3x3ft (9sq ft of space).

This is how I did it: Amazon sell wire grid storage squares, mine were from LANGRIA company, they came with attachments to put the grids together but I used zip ties as stronger and easy to move when assembled. Amazon also sell polyflute correx sheets 2mm but 2 sheets came so it’s makes 4mm. Those two items cost £41 + delivery. Then all you need is fleece if you would like to use that. Hope this helps a lil.

With the correx bottoms on the c&c website, how do I make it from the 2x5 design to a square? Is it cut in to a rectangle when you buy it?

Thanks piggy1011 I may have to do this, I'm not great at building though

Nor am I, but it’s easier than you may think! Have you looked on YouTube btw? You can actually watched them being assembled and get lots of tips.

Because you can’t use an off the shelf size, I would go with the suggestion of getting the grids and correx from amazon and doing yourself. When you buy the correx for a specific size cage ie from the c&c website, it will come pre-scored for you to fold up the sides but it won’t fit anything other than the size of cage you order, it’ll end up being too short on one side and too long on another.
As I said, My boars cage was originally a 2x4 but I’ve now made it a 4x4 so the correx now only fits over half the base of the cage. I’ve got a sheet of plastic under the other half. My boys are in a shed, so any flicking of the bedding out of the grids doesn’t matter but if it’s inside, you’d want to make sure the correx does fit up the side to keep bedding or hay in.

I see! I thought it meant 5ft × 2ft on the c&c website! Haha. I'l check again. Thankyou so much for your help
If you have the time, it's much cheaper to do on your own. Buy some grids. I found the best deal in the U.S. to be at Bed bath and beyond. Then buy a sheet of coroplast from home Depot. Make sure to zip tie each grid and it will be very sturdy! Good luck! Let us know what you decide!

I’ve also now brought clips for the sides as the pigs kept getting under the fleece. I couldn’t find one quite big enough at a decent price.

They burrow no matter what I do. I put an extra blanket in, they still go under the liners. Silly boys.

Thanks! Worth a shot! They lay right on the coroplast under the liners. Then they smell like pee 😂. Maybe they are trying to deter me from picking them up 🤔. Hahaha.

You may be right there! Haha. My pigs aren’t too keen on being picked up either, I’ll have them sleeping on me eventually!

So I remembered I have some old wood in the garage from my old wardrobe. Would something like this be suitable? Just thought I might as well use the cage bars on the cage I have then all I need to do I buy a saw, nail glue, wooden peg and chicken wire (or similar 20180904_144706.webp

There's lots of tips and useful photos of home made cages in these guides Cages And Hutch Guide
Be careful when buying storage cube grids rather than cage grids that they have 9x9 squares per grid, some of the cheeper ones have bigger holes that could be dangerous for guinea pigs.

Yeh I think I can understand it, looks good on paper :xd: What would you be using as a base?

Piggie minder- if you make the correx high enough on all sides, it’s no problem :)

@Natasha3589
where are you based? I have Ferplast 140 cm and 120 cm cages that I no longer need. the 140 cm cage hardly used. As I no longer need them you are welcome to have them as I need the space in the bedroom.

I'm in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The ferplast 140 looks great and bigger than the cage I have now. How much would you want for it?

Hi @Natasha3589 You are welcome to take both. You could make one run from both cages. But you can take the bigger one if that's all you want.
I don't want anything as I want them to be used rather than just fill my spare bedroom! One problem I am a nervous driver so I wouldn't be able to transport them to Sunderland.

@worried val of york that would be brilliant if you don't mind? . I could do with a nice little ride out to north Yorkshire haha x
