Penelope gets benezapril every 24 hours and Vetmedin every 12. I am 6 hours away visiting my family so my boyfriend is taking care of her. She gets her Vetmedin at 4 or so and he woke up at 8 something in the morning.

I have called and since it’s the weekend, not many vets are opened. I called a pharmacist and since it is only 6 hours until her next dose, they told me to skip it. She’ll get her next dose around 3pm since that’s when he goes to work.

She said it shouldn’t bother her much. It is better to miss than to have too much in the body. She has minimal heart issues. A tiny tiny heart murmur and small enlarged heart.

My bf is going to be gone for 12 hours at work and I have such bad anxiety with something bad happening to her. It should be okay but I’m just ranting on here and expressing my anxiety and feelings :(

Hi

The rule with any medication is that you can give a missed dose belatedly during the first half of the interval.
But as soon as you are closer in time to the next due dose than to the missed one please wait until the next dose one is due and just give the normal dose so you are back in the normal swing. This goes for both humans and animals.

Examples:
- With once daily medication at a 24 hour interval you can give the missed dose up to 12 hours late; after that you have to skip to the next normal dose.
- With twice daily medication at a 12 hour interval you can give the missed dose up to 6 hours late; after that you have to wait for the next normal slot in order to avoid overdosing.
- With three times daily medication at a rougly 8 hours gap, you can catch up for the first 4 hours but have to leave be for the second 4 hours.

Never be tempted to give a double dose after you have missed a slot; that could cause overdosing problems. You still need to give each dose time to be assimilated and processed in order to avoid creating more problems than you solve. :)

Since your health issue and medication is on the minor side I would not worry. ;)
