Hi :) Just want to quickly reassure I'm not putting Dettol or mint on my guinea pigs nor feeding it to them as the title is a bit off hah.

Basically I've been having a fly problem for a week now (the really tiny ones that seem to go around in hordes). Guinea pigs are ok (actually just had them at the vets this morning with the all clear, thank goodness!), but I don't want them near their cage or in the room. I'm currently cleaning the whole room and took a quick break to type this. I found online that mint is a natural fly repellent, and I have some growing in my garden. As long as the piggies don't eat it, is it ok for it to be in their room? I wonder if the smell/inhaling the smell would do anything as I'm v paranoid hah.

The Dettol part is that my mum put Dettol on the floor and sideboards where the cage is (has been dismantled to rid of flies). I have the window open, but how long do I need to wait before it's safe to put the piggies in a cage?

Have hoovered many flies out, tired lol. Are fly strips OK to place right near cage? Providing piggies don't get to them.

I use Dettol wipes for my cage, as soon as it's dry the pigs go back in, about 5 minutes to dry usually. I think it's peppermint that can repel flies/spiders etc, it shouldn't do any harm to the pigs if you put it around the room

Are they fruit flies that you have ?
I'm not sure to be honest, I barely come across flies except for the large ones but they probably are.
I can't see any issue using fly papers/strips as long as they are well away from your piggies.
Thanks :)

Thankfully the flies are gone ! What a nightmare. It seemed the hay I got was contaminated as yesterday I did a thorough cleaning and threw away the hay. Today I see none, but I have two strips hanging up around just in case. As only Tesco was open by the time I was done, they had to do with it. No flies :D However, I'm not sure what to do now as the piggies like the Tesco hay, but it's around four or five pounds for a small pack. I got the contaminated hay at B&M, and I don't like the hay at HomeBargains lately.

The Range do good hay. £3.49 for a huge bag, and I find its so much better than the B&M equivalent. Every now and then a few of the bags are a bit rubbish but I've always been okay exhange it if it's poor quality.
