We have noticed that Milo has lost 100g in weight over the past month and have taken him to the vet today. He was given a good examination including his back teeth and the vet couldn't find anything conclusive. One thing that was a concern was that Milo had a very full bladder and was slightly tender around that area. The vet managed to get a sample of urine and it didn't contain any blood and was not cloudy but it was very dilute. This may point to kidney or liver problems or possibly diabetes, although dilute urine can also be caused by stress (car trip / vet visit).

Milo is now booked in for further investigations tomorrow. He will be sedated for an ultrasound and they will take some bloods. Hopefully, this will give us a proper diagnosis.

Typically this has happened when we are putting the piggies into boarding on Wednesday as we are going away for a long weekend.

Please send Milo some healing vibes as he is feeling rather sorry for himself.

Hoping it all goes smoothly for Milo tomorrow, and turns out to be something simple and easily treatable.
How old is Milo now?
He will be three in around April this year. So only a youngster really.

He is feeling very grumpy and i am getting the evil eye.

Fingers firmly crossed for your poorly (but still gorgeous) boy!
And very sorry about the timing - don't these things always happen at the most inconvenient of times?

Gorgeous little lad. Hope they get to the bottom of it Yvonne, he's in the best hands xx

Poor little Milo, hope it’s nothing that can’t be sorted easily x
Just a little worried after what happened when we went away last year. I'm almost scared to leave them, even though i know that Paul will take excellent care of Milo and take him to the vet immediately if he deteriorates. At least we will be in the same country this time and can come home if necessary.

I can understand how worried you may feel but Milo will be in great hands with Paul, go off and enjoy your weekend x

Good luck Milo. Hope the vet can find the cause of the weight loss. Try to have a lovely break. He will be well looked after.

Poor Milo, it's bad timing but your boarder will know what to do. Come on Milo be good at the vets tomorrow and get better quickly. Betsy is sending lots of healing wheeks.

What a gorgeous boy. Healing vibes. Try your best to trust that he is in good hands and enjoy your time away.

Sending all good wishes to Milo for his tests tomorrow. That is most definitely one of the best “stink eye” faces I’ve seen. You’re going to have to keep the coriander coming to make up for this….

Milo is recovering well from being sedated and i am collecting him at 6pm. Bloods have been taken and we will get the results tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the small animal ultrasound was out of action today so this has been done using one for larger pets which is not as reliable for diagnosis in guinea pigs. I have not been charged for this as Milo may need to go back for a further ultrasound depending on the results of the blood test. However, there was no obvious sign of a stone or sludge but the wall of Milo's bladder is thickened.

For now he has been prescribed Metacam and the vet agreed that it was ok to start him on Cystease.

It’s always a relief to hear that they are ok after sedation. I bet he will be very pleased to be back home again.
Good news that there is no obvious stone or sludge.

I’m so glad he’s ok after his sedation and hopefully no stones or sludge bless him :) Hope his blood results come back ok tomorrow too. Hope you all have a good night :hug:xx

Hope the blood tests are ok. Good to hear there’s no evidence of stones or sludge.
Hopefully Milo will feel much better now he’s home.

So just had a call from the vet and nothing nasty in Milo's bloods. As there is nothing obvious, they are going to keep him on Metacam and Cerenia for a couple of weeks and then do a further ultrasound of his bladder. I am thinking it could be sterile IC, especially as he is a very nervous piggy. I am hoping that the cystease will settle everything down.

That is always such a relief that the bloods show nothing nasty. Hopefully things will settle down and he will feel much better soon. IC is such an ongoing issue for so many piggies (including my Holly).

Hope Evie is still doing well.

I now have three piggies on long term Metacam and two of them also on Cystease. I wish there was more understanding of IC in piggies. We tried taking Mavis off the Metacam by slowly reducing it over a month but within a couple of weeks her symptoms returned. We have found a low dose of 0.2ml twice daily plus Cystease seems to keep her symptom free, so i am hoping that we can find out what works best for Milo.

Evie is back to her normal “guard pig” self, thank you ❤️.

We tried weaning Holly’s Metacam down but when we did the symptoms returned, just like you describe in Mavis. Cystease and Metacam (plus extra cucumber) are apparently doing the trick for Holly at the moment. I hope that Milo will soon feel the benefit of the treatment.
