Hello everyone,

This forum has been very helpful for me and my partner a lot. I think I might give a try and hopefully we can find someone who could help our current situation.

One of our guinea pig Bun-Bun was diagnosed with a very mild case of lymphoma a month ago :(.

She is now 3.5 y.o., she is one of our first piggies with my husband. She was always a strong piggie, and never had any issues with her health, until a year ago, after her sister Cookie passed away suddenly. She has been getting so many different illnesses, just so much for a little happy piggy.
At first it all started with her getting a nasty pneumonia, that damaged her lungs, so she has been on nebulizer with Frusemide twice a day for about a year now. While examining her our cavy vet found that she also has ovarian cysts, but they are very tiny and since we found them they haven’t changed in size. We of course scheduled a spaying operation to remove them, but our plans were ruined in December the first time as she regurgitated for the first time on her birthday and spent all night at the hospital. Of course we cancelled the operation and began the observation. We have been to emergency a few times because of that issue, but now we got it sort of under control thanks to medications ( Ranitidine, sucralfate, which still are ongoing; and meloxicam at that time).

So we planned the spaying again, aaaand we had to cancel it again as the vet found out she has blood in her pee. Upon checking everything again, she was absolutely fine. So our vet said it might be interstitial cystitis. Plus another med for her - glucosamine.

We waited for some time until our vet said she is in a stable condition (apart from her breathing problems, occasional regurgitation, interstitial cystitis) to be ok for spaying.

But of course, something keeps stopping us from doing it, and our Miss Bun-Bun just perhaps doesn’t want to be operated. So approx a month ago upon checking her before the operation our vet found lumps under her neck under her fat. We got blood test and cytology. When the analysis came our vet confirmed she is 90% certain it is lymphoma.

Biopsy would cost another $700, I’m not sure though wether it is going to show anything different? If it is actually worth doing for a 10% chance it could be something else?

There are good news and bad news for us. The good news is that it is a very very mild form of lymphoma and our vet is very positive in treating it as she knows piggies who recovered well from chemotherapy treatments. So seeing how good Bun-Bun is doing so far, we might be able to get cancer under control.

The bad news is that Australia stopped distributing L-Asparaginase chemo that would help us to kill cancer. So we are in desperate search for this specific chemotherapy right now, asking everyone we know who could find it in their country so we can buy it and ship it to us. We also have a script from our vet, but it of course doesn’t work in other countries:(
I thought I might give it a try here and perhaps someone here has this L-Asparaginase chemo left or knows someone from whom we can buy it? We are even searching for a human one, as our vet is able to downscale it for guinea pigs. We need a powdered one and ideally 5 ampoules of 10000IU.

We would really appreciate your help! It would help us and especially our Bun-Bun so sooo much! As we are not ready to give up.

She is such a special piggy to us and everyone who knows her. She is a great fighter, even though she lost some hair during this year since Frusemide and now she has lost some weight too. But she is still such a happy piggy, she is active, especially when it comes to food! Eating and drinking well. Even though she sometimes looks when pooping laying down and she can’t lay down on her belly spreading her lazy leggies as before :(

We are treating her now with steroids. So hopefully they will at least stop the spread!
Apart from her other ongoing medications, she is also now on anti-vomiting medication as steroids made her feel nauseous sometimes.

I so much wish we could travel with her to another country and get this medication for her. As we could totally buy this L-Asparaginase seeing how much it costs everywhere.

I am so sorry you are going through this with your guinea pig.
It sounds like you have a great vet and are trying everything possible for your girl.
If it is a slow spreading Lymphoma than hopefully the steroids will help.

However if the chemo drug required is not available in Australia then it would not be advisable for someone else to try and ship it to you there.
Depending on the reason it is no longer distributed, this may actually be an offence, and I personally would advise people to not take the risk of shipping what may be considered an illegal drug to another country.
Australia has very strong restrictions and penalties for such behaviour and their border controls are stringent.

I really hope you can find a solution for you and your lovely girl.

Edited to add that I removed the photo of the prescription as it contained your full name and home address.
We would advise against putting such personal information on a public Forum for your own safety.

Aw, Bun-Bun is a real beauty. I’ll tag one of our members who may know about this drug @PigglePuggle she has expert knowledge of medicines

Thank you for your response and for your kind worI very much appreciate it ! ♥️
Yeah, we know that. As our vet told us. She also been trying to search for this medication but couldn’t find the way to get it. In Australia it is currently for lab use only.
I think if it is for personal use, it should be ok.
I know I’ve been taking lots of medication with me that Australia doesn’t have or I was prescribed from my home Moscow that help me, and my family sends them to me when they run out by post now and it’s been fine.
Basically what happens if the medication is sent by post is not allowed in Australia They just return it back. This happened when we tried to order Feliway Cystease Glucosamine from the UK (as we had hopes that might be better than just vegan glucosamine we have here). As the seller didn’t mention it was a supplement (which it actually is as it is even a non prescription supplement) , and just written medication, it was returned back, unfortunately. But at least we hope we should be ok with just Glucosamine we have here.

Anyway, our vet was only able to find an analogue to l-asparaginase called Oncospar (pegasparagase) here in Australia and the only company who was happy to sell it to the clinic mentioned the price would be $4000 for just a single vial of 3,750 IU! Which costs a fortune comparing to L-asparaginase, and this amount wouldn’t even last for the treatment. Which is probably not worth even trying and get this one vial. :(

So meanwhile of course we are hoping that steroids would help stop the spread, and that cancer would just die, as far as I know the cells have their own expiry.
We are going to the vet every week to monitor her. This week our vet wasn’t looking happy about her losing a bit of weight, so we increased her meals and divided in smaller portions throughout the day. Cause she usually is very hungry! But we have to be careful as can randomly choke and start regurgitating.
As well as she got ear infection this week, like otitis, which we got a topical med for her from the vet, and her lumps got a bit inflamated, so we have to try and increase the dose of Steroids on Tuesday. And we will see our vet on Thursday probably to have a blood test done again to check the progress so far.

Awww thank you so much for your kind words! ♥️ She is a sweetheart. Even though I have 4 other piggies, she is very special to me and my husband.
Very much appreciate your help.

Unfortunately our sweet Bun Bun passed away on Tuesday at 16:30 in my hands at home surrounded by love and care. We spent all day together.
She was so strong and so well all the month! But She started losing mobility on Thursday little by little. On Thursday Friday we had the visit to her vet to do another blood test and x-ray to check how she is doing. And even though the results were not great , we received such a wonderful news that we have found chemo therapy we have been looking for from lovely people we even don’t know close! My friend’s sister also has a lymphoma and she was on a treatment in Turkey. She knew a volunteer pharmacist who has been searching for l-asparaginase for our Bun Bun even though he knew it was a little piggy he never seen on the other side of the world. We were so happy that we found finally the treatment for her and it was all such a big miracle for us that these circumstances brought us to this, so we all believed Bun Bun could make it! We arranged the express delivery for it to arrive on the 16th of August and our vet was happy to go out of her working hours to the clinic for us and for Bun Bun to start the treatment.
But it was like cancer also knew this news that we found her the cure and started to develop so fast….
She became anemic, started losing her ability to walk , it was taking her so slowly away from us. but she was still eating on Monday and we even got to the clinic for a check up, and as long as she was herself, eating, we all though she could make it till the medicine arrives.
She was so strong and brave! We started syringe feeding her protein powder and critical care, as she started eating less food. It was hard for her to swallow big bites. Until the very end she was true to herself and even when she couldn’t walk she didn’t want to pee on her blanket and wanted to do this in the toilet area. 😖
On Tuesday she got worse, as she couldn’t walk, she started to fade away so quickly. But I still fed her to keep her going. She was so much willing to bite her fave veggies as she just took them in her mouth , but then couldn’t chew.
I spent her last day together with her, cuddling her in the blanket, our other piggies were so calm. I guess they already said their goodbyes and knew she was passing away.
She became so small and weak, we were sitting and she was looking so peacefully on their house that we built her and other piggies, on the bright blue sky in the window . She wasn’t eating anymore at all. And started breathing so heavy. I called my husband on the phone as she had hear last breath and in a moment she was gone in my hands. I just couldn’t believe she is gone…
I still can’t. We saved her so many times from life and death situations. She was such a pig part of our family, giving us comfort, happiness and joy. She was everywhere and wanted to spend all the time with us, and not every other piggies. She was so special, she was a piggy with a big heart and soul, so caring.
I believe she missed her sister so much, who passed away just a year ago. So I hope they’re are together now over the rainbow bridge as she loved her a lot. But this is leaving us with such a huge void, as we are heartbroken.
our other piggies are not like her. They never come to us first, unlike her, she was our connection with them. She gathered everyone together. She had such a big character and now our home and lives feel so empty. No more medicines, no more checking on Bun Bun.
we always stared our days with checking on her and she always was with us when we are home. Everything was around her. It’s so hard to let her go. I can’t believe we had such a big chance for her recovery and she couldn’t make it.
Her vet sent us flowers the next day and a card. She was surrounded by so many kind and wonderful people who even not knowing her we’re trying to help and support.
I just can’t believe this still and so hard to realize. No one’s coming to the fridge, no one’s stepping accurately on our feet to ask for extra food and treats, no one’s coming to the border of their enclosure when we approach it. She was everywhere and everything. Like a human being just in a piggy form. She was special.
We spent such 3.7 years together filled with joy and many adventures. There was so much more to come… Love our little girl so much and missing her every day a lot and hoping we will find each other somewhere in another world 💔
