Hi all

I don't have my piggy yet but I just wanted to ask if anyone else uses a ferret or critter nation for their piggys. Do you use 2 units or 1. Right now I've got one unit with a ramp to the shelf, all together the floor space is about 135cm with one unit.
Thanks

Hi, I don’t believe these cages are suitable for guinea pigs. They are ground-roaming animals and are not made to climb. The minimal floor space has to be met by the lowest layer and then any extra levels are extra. But some pigs will not use ramps. Extra levels also need to have sides as pig’s depth perception isn’t great and if they fall off they will hurt themselves. You’d be best off looking at dedicated guinea pig or rabbit cages. The minimum ground-floor space for two pigs (please do get two, they aren’t wired to live on their own) is 120cm by 60cm, but bigger is better

Thank you for the reply, but now I'm really confused, what cage shall I get then? The lady only had one female piggy left so I can only get one at the moment. Are they easy to bond two single piggys?
Thank you in advance

lots of the time females will work good with each other and you can do a male and female but make sure to have spayed and neutered

In terms of cages, it needs to be at least 120cm x 60cm on a single level. I think there’s a brand called Midwest, MidWest Guinea Pig Habitat without roof is an easy home to put together
if you’re in America, or CandC cages are great.

I’m no expert at bonding I’m afraid; I’ve just plopped a baby in with my bereaved older pig and it’s worked out ok, but it won’t always. I’ll tag @Wiebke who is very experienced.

I'm in the UK but I can't use a non secure cage like midwest guinea pig habitat I'm afraid it has to be secure and not on the floor due to my children and my cat.

If you can't put it on the floor, some people have IKEA tables with their piggie cage on (think it is the Linnmon one mostly).

Can you tell me if the purpose of a bigger cage is so that a piggy can exercise and there would be no need for a run? If this is the case I have a large run I can attach to a hutch in the garden when I'm at home but then bring her in at night and through the winter into the Ferret nation.

They get more exercise when they can run around the cage on their own schedule and not have to wait for you. Some pigs are also not comfortable running around outside their cage.

Would you be able to return the Midwest cage?

See this cage. It provides good space for two pigs.

The ferret nation cage is not suitable, even as an overnight cage, certainly not an all-winter cage. It is just not designed to meet the needs of guinea pigs. The cage lissie linked to above is a much better option if you need a cat-proof cage, and if you put it on a table then small children will not be able to interfere. Outdoor runs and indoor play pens are great, but they’re on your time. A larger cage allows them to run about and ‘zoomie’ when ever they please
