Hi I have a serious problem! I've been out all day and didn't find out until now. I need urgen help! My guinea pigs have a large rabbit cage outside. The graphs are so small u can get your finger jammed. We have been clearing the garden out last week and must have disturbed a mouse nest. Anyway the mice have moved into the cage and we have found them in their hay. There is mouse urine on the top of the cage and I really don't know what to do! I've moved the boys into our garage for now! I need help urgently since I have school starting tomorrow and football training now please help me!

Anyone with any advice please let me know because I really don't know what to do!

Sorry, I have no clue about dealing with mice. It is good that have moved your pigs for now. Only thing I can think of is a humane trap and release them in the countryside but others may have more constructive advice.

Can you move the cage for a while until the mice go and find a new home? I would think they would find a new one fairly fast as it will be getting colder soon.

Maybe you could find a hard type of screen that they couldn't get through or chew through and it would still let air in? I know some people put dryer sheets to keep them out of areas ( the ones that smell) or also Steele wool. maybe you could put them around the base of the cage by the ground so it doesn't bother the pigs, but would keep the mice away?

Hi - we had this problem last summer. The only thing that stopped it was putting chicken wire over the front of the hutch - the mice could not get through this. They must have got the message as we haven't seen one mouse this year!

We emptied the entire hutch last night and today we had a little visitor... Well not really little. Just tonight a sparrow hawk came in the garden looking for the mice. He sat outside their little den then moved up to our green wheely bin (the lid was open) and jumped inside scavenging through the hay and shavings from the mice. We were so pleased today to see no mice in the garden all day even before the sparrow hawk came. Thanks for the advice! The cage has been moved to the concrete side of our garden and the grass as been cut short so the mice can't run through it since there's no where to hide. The boys are doing fine in our garage. Thanks for the help!

Get a cat. I don't count mice as so much of a problem as rats. Now rats are a problem, they carry disease, cause damage and will bite other animals. The only way to stop them is remove the food source, or get some very small holed mesh, both rats and mice have skulls that cross over, meaning they can squeeze through holes smaller than the size of there heads. Pest control either a cat, dog or ferret - although you gave to be careful with dogs and ferrets around piggies.
Mice and rats will not co-habituate, so if you have mice you haven't got rats.

We've got a dog, cat and chickens (which will catch mice) and have still had a mouse and rat problem! Useless pets!

Been all clear for a while now!

Hehehe, ferrets, you could always use the excuse they are pest control. I loved my pair, they are still around, but they got too fat living with me, I broke my wrist and they didn't get the work. They are on loan with a friend who works them for pest control. They are now lean and mean......

Sadly I won't be allowed cats or ferrets right now. We do have a dog but idk what she would do. She's very timid and scared of other dogs. Ik she would chase the mice as Ik she already doesn't like the piggies but i don't think she would kill it. She would probably back off thinking it might get her! We did find one dead mouse today but there has been a sparrow hawk aswell so we think that killed the mouse. The hawk even jumped in our wheely bin looking for them. Didn't catch any though which is a pain. your thomas cat is a stunner @Toffee! We normally have cats but I've seen none in the past few months. I also didn't know about the mice and rats' skulls crossing or that they don't house themselves together. I suppose that great news! We also found out that we aren't the only garden around here with mice...

The thing with mice is you need to starve them out make sure there's no food accessible too them ferrets are amazing mousers (better than cats) so if you can borrow one or two all the better you could also use some manual traps for them however you really need to keep the area clear of food sources to keep them away long term.

Thanks for the advice since we last posted we haven't saw any mice which is great. There was a sparrow hawk in our garden looking for them. It hopped in our wheely bin and around the holes where they hide. Then we had two cats fighting in our garden the other day and we think that they might have been fighting over a mouse. We also blocked in the holes they are coming from. Overall we haven't saw any mice in just under a week which is great!
