Hey guys,

Now this is a strange one hoping it’s happened to someone else… when you guys give metacam do you ever notice afterwards almost instantly or maybe a minute delay that your piggie does a strange like jerking motion? It almost looks like he’s trying to be sick but without the gagging and then he’s fine straight after?

What could this be?

I've never had anything like that when medicating any of my piggies.
I wonder if it could be that the liquid is landing on the edge of his throat, resulting in a gagging reaction like if we put a finger down our own throats...

Try putting the syringe in slightly sideways so that the metacam lands in his cheek..

He’d had about 0.1ml at this point he just takes it off the syringe slowly himself as he thinks it’s a treat, I’ve seen him do it a few times and find if I distract him straight away with food he doesn’t do it, but just really strange and can’t find anything relevant online. His whole body jerks maybe 10 times then he’s fine, but quite worrying to watch him do it, don’t want it to be a reaction

Hi

Sorry, never come across anything like that on here on the forum with tens of thousands of piggies passing through here or in my own coming up to 100 piggies that have passed through my life in 50 years.

I would rather think that it is something to do with a swallowing issue in your guinea pig since 0.1 ml is a very low dosage in the first place. Metacam is extremely well tolerated, even in much higher long term dosages.
