heya everyone! so i know antibiotics need to be done at the same time each day but is there a bit of lee-way with metacam or must that be done 12 hours apart too?

I’m afraid Jenny gets it when she gets it. So evenings tend to be pretty stable at about 6.30. Most mornings it’s 6am but on a weekend she gets it later. We didn’t wake up until 9.30 on Saturday so bless her she was properly late, it’s normally nearer 8.

I am not sure if they have to be given at exactly at the same time each day, aside from the universal keeping to a similar time with antibiotics, as we as humans also try to take it at the same time each day to keep it in our system.
I think routine is nice, but on the thought of whether you actually have to follow schedule, I would think as long as you keep it at a similar time scale somewhere at the 12 hour mark you should be fine.

The reason for the 12 hours is that guinea pigs metabolize their medication quickly, so for painkillers it would mean only giving it in the morning could/will leave your pig to fend for themselves overnight (with pain/discomfort) until their next dose.
Assuming you are asking if giving it at 9:30 instead of 9:00 would be the end of the world, I would say no. As said above most are not able to stick to a 100% timescale, but we do try our hardest.

I do also think/know there will be some wiggle room for antibiotics as well, so please do not overthink about such and just try your best to keep it at a similar time each day.

I've got two piggies on long term Metacam for life. It would be impractical to give it on the dot every 12 hours every day. I do try to give it within half an hour either way but life happens, sometimes it's longer! I've even forgotten the morning dose a few times and felt very guilty but no one is perfect, we can only do our best.

thankyou! so really its been okay for you either side no more/less than 2 hours from your normal time?

bless them! aw of course, it must be hard having them on constant meds so i’m not surprised theres been a couple missed doses! i stupidly starting dellas AB course 10am so have been doing them obviously at 10pm but other half has extremely early mornings at work so i’m trying to move it to a little earlier, especially now its just the metacam. was thinking 9.30am/pm should be okay today however i’m out 8.30-10.30am tomorrow so not sure if i should give it before or after to be the safest and then should i give it whatever time i did in the morning so make it 12 hours do you think? i just don’t want to do anything that could cause a problem/put her in danger!

I think you could give it before or after, whatever is best for you, and then do the next one the same time 12-ish hours later.

Please do not overthink the 12 hour thing, as long as you are keeping it at a similar time it is fine, giving it at 11/13 hours won’t hurt your girl.

As I said we all try our best but in the height of my digbys illness, the worst he got was 2 hours late due to personal issues. As long as you are trying your best.

I'd give it before you go in case you are delayed getting back. I'd also give it at 9.30 this morning and 9 this evening. You won't cause a problem or put her in danger by jiggling her meds by half an hour. When mine have ABs they get the first dose when we get back from the vets whatever time that is. I will then move the time backwards or forwards by half an hour for a few days to make the time more convenient.

thanks so much for the reassurance! so as long as whatever time i do it in the morning do it the same time at night, all should be okay.. sorry about all this i just really worry!

Hi

There is leeway. If possible keep ideally at least 8 hours in between dosages.
If you get to below 6 hours with the gap, then you may want to rather consider skipping.

It does however depend on how high the dosage is. With smaller dosage for low level pain, giving the full dosage of metacam once a day may be more effective. If you are maxing it out for greater pain, then a regular rhythm with more even dosages (as much as you can manage around your daily life) becomes more important. Use your common sense.
