I'm worried that my vet has given too much metacam to my pig. He said that he gave some during surgery but that was only hours after I had given some rheumocam. My vet is absolutely piggy savvy and I wish I had asked why now because it's bothering me. It was written on the admittance sheet what I had given med wise that morning.

My pig gets 0.4ml dog metacam which I know is less than the max but I didn't think giving more hours later was a good idea. I don't want to ask him now tomorrow because it will seem like I am questioning him.

Hi

Metacam is an integral part of the operation cocktail as it is both a painkiller and an anti-inflammatory to help keep any swelling down. Please always tell your vet just how much metacam your piggy has had in the 24 hours leading up to an operation. If you have done that on the admission sheet then it will be taken into account when computing the dosage needed for the operation and there is no need whatsoever for you to worry. You can give up to 1 ml of dog strength metacam (current UK vet brand is rheumocam) every 24 hours to a 1 kilo piggy (although it is often broken in two dosages every 12 hours). ;)

Wishing your piggy a good recovery.

If in any doubt, you can enquire at the clinic for their advice for the day pre- and post-op. I have learned to always aks how soon any freshly operated piggy can have more metacam when I pick them up after an operation.

Thank you. I did tell them I gave 0.4ml metacam this morning . Though I didn't tell them about last night, they didn't ask. Vet told me he gave some early afternoon, only about 3/4 hours between the doses. The person booking me in I'm sure she wrote it down as she asked the question and was scribbling as I told her.

Vet told me to not give anymore until tomorrow morning. .
Wish I had said to the vet now when he told me that I had given some this morning, would have given him the opportunity to tell me if it was fine or he had made a mistake.

Hi

Please stop worrying. Your piggy won't be any worse for it.

The dosage from the previous evening would have been already pretty well metabolised so it is not as crucial. I have had plenty of piggies operated on as an emergency with some metacam in their system and they have come through the op just fine as long as the vets were aware of it and could work around it.

Just follow the advice when to give the next dosage to make sure that it all hs been worked out of the system before you restart.

Always follow the advice of your vet and never be scared to ask questions :)

Thank you. I wasn't expecting it as I've had pigs on metacam before go in but not given it again by the vet.

She is looking good this morning.

Your vet will have simply given less metacam for the operation to get the level right; there was never a risk of overdosing. ;)

Glad that all your fears have not come to pass and your girl is recovering well and is safely back on her metacam.
