Hi all

My 'special girl' Darklis is (sadly) on long term pain relief for nerve damage to her spine. She started on Metacam, and she absolutely loved it! As soon as she saw me with the syringe in my hand, she would come running over to the bars of the cage and would virtually wrench the syringe out of my grasp! :))

Unfortunately, the Metacam didn't seem to work too brilliantly on her pain (she continued to barber the area on her back quite badly) so she's now being tried on Gabapentin (twice a day), which she started on Thursday of last week.

But she absolutely hates the taste of the Gabapentin......she gives me the complete run-around when it comes to medicine time (no more running over to the bars of the cage :(!) and you can just tell by her facial expression that she loathes the taste of her new medicine.

I tried a bit myself, and it's soooooo bitter, so I can't say I blame poor Darklis for not liking it!

I've tried mixing it with juice (orange and apple) but no joy. I've tried dipping the tip of the syringe in honey/ProC probiotic/baby food, but still not a chance!

Does anyone have any imaginative ideas as to how I can mask the revolting taste of the Gabapentin?

I don't have a problem with catching and giving the medicine to Darklis twice a day, but I'm a bit worried about when we go on holiday, cos there's no way our regular pet-sitter would be confident enough to do the honours!

Someone on here a few weeks back was told by her vet to put equal parts of undiluted ribena with it - and that seemed to work!

Hmm....that could work! I drink Ribena by the gallon (it's my 'can't live without it' item rolleyes) but I drink the sugar free variety, and I'm not sure the sweetener in that is good for piggies, so I'll get a small bottle of the 'normal' Ribena and try that later.

Thanks! Tracey x

I was going to recommend ribena as well - it has the strongest flavour. Best of luck!

Oooo I'm also in the ribena fan club it worked a treat with Mr Roo :)
