I have just read the thread about woodshavings and thought I would turn it around to Megazorb. Hope that is ok.

I have read alot about Megazorb and I realise that there is a thread above, but I thought I would ask where members get theirs from and how much it costs? What does it look like?

I have to admit that I have always been a woodshavings kinda of girl with hay sprinkled over the top.

I have recently tried fleece that it just didn't work for me. I have a hubby who gets a tight chest (and I don't mean a six pack.... I wish! ;) :))) to hay or animal fur so I was banned from putting this in the washing machine!

I've just gone back to Megazorb, and I really like it. It looks like small papery pellets - imagine cat litter, but soft! Very soft indeed. You don't need to put it as deep as you do shavings, you spread a layer and then sort of pat it down to make a layer. You can sweep poop off the top, it's very absorbent and kind to their feet.

I pay about £6 a sack, and one sack does all of my indoor lot and some left over (that's about 9 cages).

The shavings are SO rubbish at the moment here, big splinters and bits of dirt in there... I had to try something!

I pay £5.50 per bag and I really love magazorb. I used to use carefresh but it got so expensive and I now buy megazorb in bulk. Works out a lot cheaper and it's the best bedding I've ever used.

I use megazorb, I find it better than shavings, and it is kinder to their feet. It is very absorbant, more so than shavings. I pay around £6 a bag, it is a bit more expensive than shavings but worth it I think.

Hi Bev! I have used megazorb in the past, but only when I couldnt get aubiose and I hate it! It reminds me of ash, grey, dusty and ugly-it makes the cage look dirty! The pigs kick it out and it makes a mess, it isnt cost effective as I went through 6 bags in one month as opposed to 2 1/2 bags of aubiose. Just my opinion but I would use it as a second to aubiose but way before woodshavings rolleyes

I've just started to use Megazorb. I put a thin ish layer and then another layer of hay on top.

Paid £5.85 for quite a large bag - used just under half of it for four hutches.

It didn't smell, wasn't dusty, easy to store - no negatives so far.

I ordered it from my local farm shop but will definately be getting some more.

Well, yesterday was the day that I used Megazorb for the first time.

I found it easy to handle, i.e. I didn't have to break it up like the compacted shavings I buy, and I liked the look of it in the hutches.

It is too early to comment on the absorbency yet, but the bedroom of Stuart, Josie and Sparrow will be the one to look at first .... they sit in a row in their bedroom and wee and wee and wee! I have to change their bedding every day! :(:{

If you kind of pat it down to form a layer, you can sweep the pooh's off the top, it's great.

I've gone over to it now for all my piggies except a few that I'm testing on fleece (the indoor / special needs ones).

* can get this in bales and it cheaper that way. i use to use it but turned to betbeds as my nearest place for bales was 20 miles away

Thanks Sophie.

I was a little unsure how much to put in the hutches but noticed after a couple of hours of the piggies walking on it that it had compacted down.

I am really hopeful that I will like Megazorb!

any northwest stockists? where do I need to go to get it, no petshops have it round here! Is there a special kind of shop that would stock it?

Try www.thehayexperts.co.uk. Obviously you have to pay postage but they stock loads of other great things for guinea pigs as well, so you can combine your order with some goodies or food.

Thanx but don't need anything else as my understairs cuboard is bursting with treats toys etc.. so postage is too much. May stick to carefresh for now and hopefully stop it completely soon as whole cage has vetbed anyway!

Try your nearest equine supplies, it's commonly used as horse bedding.

I cleaned out all of my shed yesterday - that's one huge pen, and then 2 hutch blocks (2 blocks of 6 cubes) and only used one bag - it's amazing! You don't need it thick like you would with shavings, just a thin layer. The pigs love it and it's soft on their feet

Goldie,

I also sell it at £7.40 a bag if that is any easier for you. Usually have it in stock

We used to use megazorb for our hamsters. We worked it out and it was much cheaper than shavings. The only problem we had was storing it as it lasted forever with the hamsters and that it wasn't stocked locally. I would however recommend it. Might be worth us buying it again now as we have 2 rabbits, 3 hamsters and our new piggie :)

Eventually I want to move over to fleece, but of all the "off the shelf" bedding, I use Megazorb. Costs less than shavings (and a LOT less than Carefresh), has none of the nasty wood oils that I believe are potentially harmful to skin and respiratory systems in critters that have their noses barely off the floor (not to mention the chemicals that get absorbed through the system and have to be processed by the liver), and is generalyl low in dust.

When I first had piggies I of course kept them on shavings. Why not, pet shops sell shavings, and there's even a picture of a piggy on the pack!?

The more I learnt, the more I knew why not. I did move to Hemcore (chipped hemp, similar to Aubiose), and whilst the overall dust levels were OK, and there were none of the phenol concerns (please, pine oils are used to disinfect, would you soak your piggy in Dettol 24/7?), it was quite sharp and so not ideal for their feet in my opinion. As soon as I found a local stockist of Megazorb I moved over to that, and now the biggest problem is where to put the 4 sacks at a time I buy so I don't have to do a weekly 40 mile round trip for the stuff!

I will say there is a disposable bedding I think is better than all of these, and that is chopped cardboard. However, I don't have a local supplier and the carriage costs three times more than a bale of the stuff. I have tried it, from two well know suppliers, and found one to be very good, the other still appeared OK, but there were charred packing tape remnants on some of teh pieces (it's heat treated) that put me off buying again.

So if you can get cardboard locally, use that. If you can only get Megazorb locally, use that. I would say in my experience never use shavings though. Although if you can use fleece, then that would be absolutely the best :)
