Hello All, I am new to this forum and wondered if some of you could help me out with Megazorb.

Currently I have 3 boars - 1 of which is seperated from the others at the moment due to biting - and they live on fleece with zorb fabic underneath. Unfortunately I am finding that the fleece is not working for me anymore, I had a change in work circumstances, so I am not at home during the day to spot clean as often as I would like and I feel that its getting smelly and needing a full change every 3 days.

I have been doing some research on Megazorb and think that this looks like a good option - but I am wondering how much I will need as I have a large 3 storey cage (2 storeys are 1.5m by 0.75m and the top level is their kitchen and is 0.75m x 0.75m) I think that equates to 2 storeys at 2x5 grids and 1 kitchen at just under 2x3 grids.

Does anyone have any experience in using megazorb in a big cage - how many bags at what size will I need and how often will I need to change it?

Thanks! :)

I've never used megazorb, only fleece, but have you looked at Fitch or aubiose? Some
members have tried it and liked it.

I used megazorb on its own for the first time. On its own I don't like it. The previous week I'd used a mix of megazorb with shavings and it works a lot better.

Megazorb is usually around £8 for an 85ltr bag from horsey type suppliers. I use it with a washable foam matting over the top - this allows me to sweep the poos off the matting on a daily basis whilst the Megazorb takes care of the wees. I get up to a week with this regime. I also like it because you can compost the used megazorb.
Some people have not got on with Megazorb, I like it and it doesn't aggravate my asthma but it has to others so I am always wary of a complete recommendation - bedding is trial and error for everyone!

Okay - So i just bought my 1st bag of Megazorb. Hope it comes soon as my boys are due a full cage clean on Friday and would like to use the Megazorb then. Quite excited to see how this changes my regime! :)

Be careful as its sometimes very dusty. I've used it in the past and didn't like the amount of dust in it. After trying lots of bedding I've found Fitch to be the best and it goes a long way. There's a thread going at the moment on Fitch that might be worth a read

It should be ok if you give it a good shake outside first. Some bags were worse than others of the ones I had. If you have somewhere to store it it's worth ordering Fitch in bulk

I found megazorb very dusty so switched to Fitch which is more expensive but it's brilliant. Totally dust free and very absorbent. I use fleece cage liners at the moment though as always wanted to try them and they are great too :)

The fleece just isn't working for me anymore, change in job circumstance means I can't spot clean as often as I would like during the day and I think my absorbent layers are past it as I feel the fleece is wet a lot of the time! I'm having to do full cage cleans every 2 - 3 days and it's not feasible anymore. I'll see how I get on with Megazorb and try Fitch next time! :-)

Megazrob arrived yesterday and I put it in the cage straight away. The boys seem to like it so far and it didnt seem dusty or smelly at all. Pleased so far.

For those that do use it - do you still spot clean daily? I did this morning but not sure if I need to?

Thanks! :)

what is Megazorb? is it a paper type bedding like care fresh ?

I have used megazorb and liked it the first time around but not the second. The second was very dusty indeed and I ended up having to throw it away, however, in terms of cleaning yes - it's great as the wee clumps together and you just scoop those bits out daily, along with poop. It does take a while to dig around though! Same with any bedding to be honest x

Yes, think of it as very similar to Carefresh but with smaller pieces and a lot cheaper. It would be a fab product if it were not for all the dust! Carefresh is far less dusty, but far more expensive!

I honestly have not noticed this bag as being dusty at all...... fingers crossed its the same going forward.

We've just been given a compost bin from the OH's father so hoping we can start composting the Megazorb too.

I really hope this works out as the fleece was a nightmare........

I have been using Carefresh and its lovely but VERY expensive, spent over £30 in about 4 weeks on it... I am making my own fleece cage liners with a built in waterproof layer ( incontinence pad ) which I am hoping will be easier to keep clean i.e spot clean every day as i can spot the poo ! I imagine i will have to wash every 3 days incase of wee smells but my washer is always on anyhow with two kids !

what problems did you have with fleece ? x

Glad your batch isn't dusty :) Hope this is the right solution for you. I found fleece works best when made into a quilt. I made mine with a top layer of fleece, a filling of polyester wadding and a waterproof bottom layer (or plain fleece is fine too). Thus no need to lay it on top of anything absorbant. The only thing to do is to scoop the poop daily, which needs doing with any bedding, and then a brush down for the wash twice a week. I found in terms of wee I use trays of Fitch and hay, and they do most of their wees in the Fitch, keeping the fleece quilts dry and quite clean. I could get away without changing the fleece as often as I do.
If you end up finding Megazorb in the entire set-up too fussy or time-consuming perhaps minimising the mess and time aspect of caring for the fleece could help you, with the use of large hay trays with megazorb in :)

The problem with the fleece I think is more my time restraints now than the actual fleece itself. I am not able to spot clean during the day as I am now out at work and only spot cleaning twice a day didn't seem to be working for me. I also think my absorbant layers in my liners are past it now as I noticed the pigs were wet a lot of the time. I was doing a full cage clean every 2 days in the end (as well as baths when I felt the boys were wet) - not really convenient when the cage is so big!

I'm hoping the Megazorb keeps them dryer and will allow me to spot clean only twice a day without too much mess. If I feel that its getting to much - the idea of haytrays is an excellent one @Critter, I might try that! :)

I really do want a new cage - but I think I will need to move them out of my hallway for that as the cage they have is probably at its maximum size for the space I have. I'll think about this more though when I come to a definate conclusion about if the boys can be housed back together again or if they will need to split permenantly as this will determine how many cages I need! :)

I found it dusty and couldn't use it again when we finished the bag, I've got allergies and didn't want to risk making the guinea's ill, so I ended up going to fleece.

At least yours isn't dusty!
