Hello,

I have a pig whom I believe has a dental problem brewing. She's had her teeth checked but was given the all clear. She has another appt booked in for Mon to get a second opinion. She's showing me signs that her mouth is giving her discomfort.

She is on a combination of meds currently; Frusol, Fortekor and Vetmedin for heart issues. Zantac for a gut issue.

Does anyone know of any contraindications of adding Metacam to this line-up? I can't find any studies online to suggest a problem.

Thanks.

I am not aware of any. tagging in @helen105281 as she has had experience of heart piggies

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear your little one is poorly. Whereabouts in UK are you related?

My piggy was on Metacam whilst she was on Furesemide & Vetmedin, she had congestive heart failure but had to have Metacam as the heart failure was caused by a cancerous mass in her chest. It's best to check with your vet anyway, they would prescribe Metacam if they think it necessary. If she has a dental problem brewing then it is best to see Simon Maddock at the Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton as he is a dental expert & does conscious dentals :)

Thanks guys. I'm located in Cheshire @sport_billy. My vet practice is exotics-savvy, that being said I'm still going ahead with having another appointment. Her behaviour since the last appointment has indicated dental to me. Awake dental sounds bloomin' marvellous @Poppy'sMum do you know if that's including the molars/premolars? Thanks @Jaycey I'm good with doses, it's adding it to her heart meds which is new territory for me.

@Kaipo Cavia yes Simon will burr the molars conscious, if your piggy is a heart piggy then as far as I aware he s the only vet in the UK that will do this. Your piggy should not even have a whiff of gas if the risk is too great, so seeing Simon really would be your best bet :)

Unfortunately I'm all too aware of her potential outcome if she goes under, so thank you for the invaluable info about Simon @Poppy'sMum it's very much appreciated. Following Monday's appointment with my vet, I imagine I'll be giving his practice a call. x

I was told that it was best not to use Metacam while on ACE Inhibators but my Mabel was on both for the last year or so of her life with no ill effect. I second the Cat and Rabbit clinic recommendation. My heart pig Sophie sees them regularly has she has lower incisor issues.

Thank you @helen105281 that's good to know. Following yesterday's appointment at my usual practice @Poppy'sMum my vet recommended giving Almond "a little bit of gas" to get a better look at her teeth. I called the Cat and Rabbit clinic this morning and was told there's a two week wait currently and to send them an email with my pet info etc, I've just done that. Do we know of any heart-pigs that have awoken after being gassed? I'm unsure of whether to wait for an appointment with Simon or go ahead with the gas at my usual practice?

My heart pig Fuzzy had a full spay under GA which was done at the Cat and Rabbit clinic. I am not surprised there is a 2 week wait as they are so busy. Were they not able to offer you an emergency slot?

I know that @Adelle amazing heart piggy Fudge had a full spay under anesthetic, and at the time I think she was just a month or so shy of her 8th birthday!
So it is definitely possible.

Oh wow, in your case it worked out well then @helen105281 No emergency slot offered. The lady on reception said they'd aim to reply to my email within 1/2 days and explained they're very busy. That's why I'm considering going to my usual vet re: dental check under gas. Almond's weight is stable but it concerns me risking the two week wait with any potential dental issue worsening during that time.

Even if they give her a little bit of gas to get a better look, chances are they are not as knowledgeable as Simon or Kim & any procedure done might need re-doing by Simon at a later date. I personally would get an appointment booked to see Simon or Kim as soon as possible, even 2 weeks away I would trust him he knows more than any other vet about piggies' teeth :) Get your normal vet to give you a some Metacam in the meanwhile in case your piggy is uncomfortable & start topping her up with syringe feeds now.

Thanks @Poppy'sMum, Almond is booked in for Monday! Not as much of a wait as initially advised, very pleased. Yes we're already on the Metacam and syringe-feeds. I've got syringe-feeding down to a fine art after an umpteen number of pigs over the years (much to Almond's annoyance) thanks again.

Great so you are seeing Simon or Kim on Monday? Well done on getting an appointment, you won't regret it :) Take all her meds with you when you go, so they can see what she's already on.

Hope the appointment goes ok. Simon and Kim are brilliant and will really put your mind at rest.

Excellent, well worth the trip in my opinion
The boys and I all have our paws crossed for your little girl on Monday, Simon is fab! :) x

Definitely well worth the trip. Takes me about 3 hours in total if I go by car, though sometimes my partner takes them on the train via London.

I'm booked in on monday afternoon, for my asbo pig Zak,another fight with 6th boar date,he is going to the plum fairy,to see his wound on his face ! Katie my cat is in need of vaccination.i hope you get your lady well soon.

Almond's visit with Simon was a success! Each tooth was overgrown - some growing towards her cheeks, others inwards over her tongue. A few small ulcers but no sign of abscess. Simon filed the malposed teeth, no gas used. Very happy.

Thank you all who recommended the clinic and for the well wishes. X
