I did a quick search but didn't see anything - I do apologise if this is a repeat of what's already been discussed.

I popped to a small pet shop today on my dinner hour to get Max and Jamie some more hay. Found a big bag that smelled wonderful and fresh. There's a picture of a rabbit & guinea pig on the front but I also noticed the words 'medicated' on the front.

Worried I'm giving them something they should not have I asked the lady at the till that this 'medicated' hay is in fact to eat for guinea pigs and she assured me yes. It's for guinea's. So I bought it.

Just want to do a double check before I open the bag and give it to them.

No it's long and lush and the smell is far more lovely than the first pack of hay I bought. It looks really fresh. Just still confused about the "medicated" line.

Just got the bag out again and it's from a company called L & N Pet Comforts

I remember a while ago when I was looking after a friend's piggy & she fed him on Wilkinsons hay - that said it was medicated & he loved it. Not sure what it is 'medicated' with though so I'd be a bit wary of feeding it to my own piggies xx

Thanks Pompypigs - yes I agree I'm confused what it's medicated with?

I mean no problem - I'll pop to another store tomorrow - they still have their old stash although looking a little low.

It really does smell lovely but we don't eat 'medicated' food do we?

Tried to do a google search and couldn't find much on the company. Nothing relating to the hay..

Just found this re Wilko's hay
Why are Wilkinsons Products the best for my small animal?

Dust Extracted

Our Hay and Straw are dust extracted to create a healthy environment for small animals.

Medicated

Our Hay and Straw are medicated to reduce the risk of micromite and myxomatosis in small animals, helping to keep down veterinary costs.

Can't find the ingredients though :{

found the same! :) Just thinking, if it deters mites... then maybe animals shouldn't eat it either? Just thinking than an insecticide, however mild, can't be good to ingest in the long run...

Hmm...well that sounds like a good thing right? It doesn't have any type of medicinal smell.

Thank you for finding that information.

I'll pop to another store tomorrow to get another one just in case...

confuddled.... I mean there wouldn't be a pic of a guinea pig on the bag if it was dangerous... but then I want to know I'm not harming them

Thank you again - you are a star

Oops last post was to Pompypigs

I'm really unsure now. Will have to learn more...

Just want to add that it's not Wilkinsons as in the big shop - it's a pet product supplier. I've emailed them to ask what they use - think it would be good to know for definite xx

That would be fantastic to learn

This forum is great I must say! will check in tomorrow.

Thank you so very much from me and the piggies x

Just thought I'd post the response I've received by email:

Hi Suzanne,

Thankyou for your enquiry.

We medicate our hay with a powder which helps to kill insects by dehydrating them. The powder contains NO active ingredients & is therefore not harmful to small animals.

Still not sure what the 'powder' is so I've replied asking that xx

Here's the response I've just got about the 'powder'

It's called silico-sec & works as a dessicant, dehydrating insects as they crawl over it.

With regard to the hay, our barn dried hay is excellent quality & has a higher nutrient value than traditionally made hay. It provides an excellent source of fibre for small animals. Please visit our website for more details.
Thanks
Margaret

I have no idea what that is :{

That actually sounds good doesn't it?

What do you all think given the information?

if it's right it would certainly stop the parasitic infestation that gets talked about on here alot wouldn't it?

I agree Lisa, It does sound good... I always worry about things like this?!

Sounds like good stuff to me. I will have to look out for this when I get my little piggies.

I am learning so much from this forum.
