One of my sows, Sage, had a sebaceous cyst which ruptured yesterday. We took her to the vet and she drained it (gross yet weirdly satisfying!) and flushed out the wound that is left. We have been prescribed baytril and metacam, and the vet suggested flushing with saline again.
I am worried about irritating the wound and stopping it from healing.
Would you flush out with saline again if the vet has already done it?
Sage is absolutely fine- eating, drinking and popcorning around. She is being an absolute pickle about taking her meds though, 😆

Hi

Saline solution is a mild antiseptic, like hibiscrub or F10 antiseptic (note: different concentration to F10 disinfectant). You can use any of these in order to try and prevent an infection in the open cyst. It won't irritate the cyst - rather the opposite.

Please note that it is highly likely that the cyst will eventually refill, burst or can go infected. In this case, it may need operative removal.

All the best.

Thank you Wiebke ☺️
There is a small hole where the cyst was before it burst. The vet gave us some extra syringes, silly questions but do I squirt the saline onto the wound or inside? How many times would you recommend doing this?

Please squirt the saline inside the hole for as long as it can be kept open in order to prevent an abcess to form and to help flush any speck of infection out. Push on the plunger quite strongly to ensure that it is all flushed out - basically follow advice on open abcesses care.

Do this 2-3 times a day and if possible, work any scab off that forms on the top. Ideally you do it for 5-10 days but do so for as long as you can.
