Hi we took our gunea pig in because he wasnt feeling well he'd stopped eating and drinking the vet said woody had URI she sent him home with enroflex 2.27 mg every 24 hours and meloxicam 1.5mg every 24 hours we also syringe feed him and gave him water.. on his third day it seemed like it hurt for him to be picked up because he was crying but we fed him and gave him his meds right after his meds about 10 minutes later he began shaking like seizures as we laid him in his carrier to rush him to the vet he died . I asked the vet was those dosages too high he weighed 2 pounds 6 ounces ..the vet said no I dont know what happened were Heartbroken

I'm sorry your piggy didnt make it, but the drug doses you mention are completely safe. Enrofloxacin can be given at 5-10mg per kilo body weight per day, and meloxicam is often used short term at that dosage for acute pain. Sounds like the vet did everything they could, also so did you of course, perhaps there was something more serious going on that nobody could diagnose without invasive tests he wasnt well enough to have. Piggies are delicate, and complex diagnostics are often stressful and take time- be kind to yourself as you grieve and know that you and the vet did all the right things x

I’m so sorry for your loss 😞
This must have been a shock for you . Sometimes it is just their time to go 🌈

Hi!

I am very sorry but the medical dosages were appropriate and would have taken much longer to kick in than the time the seizure happened. It sounds like something else was going on and the body was likely already closing down.

The extra stress from the pick-up and the rush to the vets may have simply speeded up the ongoing process a little bit but not brought it on, so please don't feel guilty or bad for having done what every good owner is expected to do. What you did would not have changed the outcome in any way. :(

The grieving process of any lovin owner starts with re-examining events and some major soul-searching of their own actions, even more so in the wake of a sudden and rather traumatic death. We humans are wired to reflect everything back onto us. It is very easy - and very common - to put two incidents into a causal connection even when they are coincidental, especially when one was an action of yours or - in the case of a potential perceived vet mistake - reflect the distress outwards in the form of intense anger.
Many an online myth has started this way and the internet is full of dire warnings from shocked owners - but not necessarily of correct facts.

Unfortunately without a post-mortem examination at the vet's you will never know the true cause but please rest assured that it was neither due to a failure of your vet's or your own actions.

Here is more information that can help you make sense of what has just happened as well as practical information to make the process easier for you and any surviving companion: Death, Dying, Terminal Illness, Grieving and Bereaved Companions: Information and Support for Owners and Their Children

Thanks everyone our little woody would've been 3 in july
