have i been a complete idiot this whole time owning my girls and been filling syringes wrong? i ALWAYS run out of meds when the girls are on a course, am soso careful to measure correctly (normally 0.3ml) but notice theres always around .5 of a .1ml left in the syringe that sits in the end… have i been overfilling every single time?!

added a picture of the bit i fill and then i measure up to the required dose so 0.3ml normally..

Hi

No, you have not been overfilling. What you are not taking into account is that the measurements on the syringe measure the volume between a fully pressed down plunger and a pulled back plunger because that is what is dispensed - but the plunger doesn't go right down into the syringe tip anymore (due to a much higher injury risk in case the plunger is pushed out accidentally).

The little extra bit in the tip that is not expressed is therefore correctly ignored by the syringe markings because it is not going into your piggy. I hope that makes sense?

You are not being stupid. I'm sure that a lot more people wonder! I certainly did. 'Stupid' questions are very often anything but.

I had to work out the solution myself but you will find that in syringes with a plunger that goes right down into the narrow part and pushes it all out the 0.1 ml mark is that tiny little bit closer to the opening to account for the nozzle volume that is pushed out when you hold the two syringes next to each other. ;)

No questions are stupid, we all come up against these things sometimes and it's useful for others to see the answers. A new vet gave me 3ml syringes last time I went for Metacam, when I got home I stood and stared at them for sometime wondering where .5ml was! For anyone who doesn't know 0.5 ml is marked on the syringe as 1/2 before the 1 ml.
