As the title says, does anyone know if there is a guideline for maximum width between the bars on the cage? I have bought a dog pen which I was planning to use to fence off part of my shed for the guinea pigs, but the bars seem a bit wide apart. I have 8 week olds.

how wide are the bars?
try testing it? see if they can get out.
thing is they are very little now, so might be able to get out but they will grow very fast and then you wont have a problem.

if you already bought it, i would suggesting testing if they get out (supervised of course) and if they do, then use some cardboard to cover the bottom so theres no chance of escape.

for adult pigs, according to somewhere on guineapigcages.com, the maximum spacing is 1.5 inches x1.5 inches. I didn't realise this and had sucessfully been using wider gaps for a while, but stopped when I read that it was risky.
for littl'uns you want smaller spacing, or if the spacing in the dog cage is an ok distance than you could just weave cardboard around the first 15cm or so until they are bigger :)

Ohh, didnt know this, you learn something every day. I would have a measure. Check also that they cannont escape and also that it isnt a size where they can just get there head through with the potential of getting stuck, if you understand.

x.
