Maude was booked in for the 12th July as I suspect she has ovarian cysts. She Suffers with UTI’s, bit smelly, regular messy bottom, extended abdomen, and I think a slight bit of crust of one of her nipples.
My vet phoned me this morning to say there is a cancellation on Thursday morning if I could bring her in to get her seen to sooner rather than later.
So she’s booked in this Thursday morning for an ultrasound, didn’t realise she had to go under anaesthetic for the Ultrasound, I’m going to be a nervous wreck at work during the day! Maudes around 5 years of age, I hope she’s going to be okay. 😣

Good luck! Remember that we tend to hear about the ones that go wrong, not the many which go well and without incident 😊

My little sow had an ultrasound and they had to shave the area they were going to scan and then dollop on a blob of gel. The process was completely painless but she was obviously really narked about the whole thing because she didn't know what was happening. They had to shave her and then leave her to calm down before the actual scan. So I'm guessing that a bit of anaesthetic might ease the whole process? Good luck little lady x

Hope all goes well for Maude. xx

You could ask if your vet would be willing to attempt the ultrasound without an anaesthetic. Our piggy Mavis has had three now all without the need for her to go under. Our vet says it depends on the piggy and how stressed they get. Mavis is quite laid back and easily placated with a bit of coriander. In the UK it tends to be a light sedation rather then a full anaesthetic for ultrasound or x-rays. So it may be same in Australia. Milo was sedated for his x-ray and blood sample and recovered very quickly. When i collected him from the vets he wasn't even sleepy. Try not to worry. :)

Wishing you and Maude the very best. I’d definitely check with vet whether a GA is necessary. My vet did an ultrasound without any. It may depend on how calm a piggie is because keeping still is key

Thank you very much everyone for offering your experiences, I will definitely chat to the vet when I drop her off whether its a full anaesthesia or just a mild sedative. I’d much prefer her to be awake if possible! They said the ultrasound will cost between $300-400, which I thought was a lot. But now it makes sense if she’s going fully under! Hopefully they can try without.

Best of luck for Maude, my vet also did ultrasound scans for suspected ovarian cysts with no sedation or anaesthesia and they were both fine with it, even bitey feisty Piggle! I actually recommended the vet sedate Piggle as nail trims usually end with hooman bloodshed (wrestling a sack of psychotic weasels best describes trying to trim Piggle's nails) but she was very good for the vet.
Both piggies came home a bit cross and with skimpy furdo bikini shaves like they were auditioning for Love Island lol. And neither had cysts in the end even though Piggle had swollen teats like she had fake boob implants and kept humping her friends' faces relentlessly, so that was £170 just for 2 extreme haircuts lol!
But many vets do conscious ultrasounds so well worth asking- good luck x

Thank you! In that case, maybe I’ll phone up tomorrow and have a chat with them to see if it’s possible without the anesthetiser!

Good luck for Maude - hope everything goes well Hannah and it’s a great idea to discuss Maude’s treatment with them

My piggies that had ultrasounds were all fully conscious and furred for them. The vet took them in the back briefly, and then brought them back out a little gooey (mostly cleaned up, but it's ultrasound goo ... it's never fully cleaned up). They were pretty much dry by the time we got home, probably assisted by the towel in their carrier.
I would definitely ask about the vet's protocols, what's required, and what to expect.

My specialist vet does conscious ultrasounds too, but when Ruby needed an ultrasound, the quickest appointment I could get was with my 'other' specialist vet who is wonderful, but also a bit more 'rough and ready'.
He always recommends a 'quick whiff of gas to keep everybody relaxed' and I was able to hold Ruby throughout (like I said - rough and ready. I fully understand this would never be allowed to happen elsewhere in the world, but am simply sharing my own experiences of holding a conscious guinea pig and a sedated guinea pig for an ultrasound).
Honestly both were fine, but I will be honest and say that Ruby was done quickly, popped back into her carrier, and literally rolled over and started munching hay within minutes. She was 5 years old at the time, and was not under a full anaesthetic obviously, but I would clarify how your vet plans to sedate Maude. If it's a quick whiff of gas this is actually a very gentle way to keep them in a good position and make sure they aren't stressed.
I shan't comment on the price, as despite Switzerland being crazy expensive, when you use the rough and ready vet, you get a discount if you assist in the procedure!

Thanks @Swissgreys!
I only spoke to the receptionist today, I’ll try and speak to Aaron my exotic vet tomorrow and see what his actual plans are!

All the best for Maude on Thursday.

Good luck Maude for Thursday, Ellie was about 6yrs when she had her ultrasound scan & the vet did discover a walnut sized ovarian cyst.

It was pre covid, but I held Ellie & the vet shaved her a big square'ish patch on her tummy & splodged on the gel (did cause a few disgusted mumbles) then the scan was done within a few minutes. I was only charged the consult fee & approximately £20 GBP for the scan if that I think?
No gas or anaesthesia, just a handful of dandelions to keep her occupied/happy!
Ellie had the chorulon (hcg) hormone injection treatment for hers due to her age. They worked really for her.

Hope all goes well xx

Thank you for your input!
Sounds like everyone’s pigs have been scanned simply without much hassle, I hope my vet will consider this.

Maude had her big day today!
I sent her off to the vets with a packed lunch as she was staying the day while I was at work :D
All went well with her ultrasound and good news, she doesn’t have ovarian cysts or stones/sludge! I guess I was just being a paranoid pig mum! She does however keep getting recurring UTIs so she’s been sent home with some antibiotics, different ones than last time as they upset her belly.
So in all, I paid $420 for a shave :)):))
Ah well! Good job I love ‘them isn’t it!
And I’m pleased she doesn’t need surgery :luv:

That's an expensive shave lol, I had just the same with my 2, all the symptoms of cysts but... nothing lol.
It's nice to know though isnt it that there's nothing serious going on with the lady bits or bladder or kidneys, well worth the money :)
Hope the UTI clears soon! X

Glad it’s not ovarian cysts. I hope her UTI clears up soon.
