My lovely little REW Casper has a bit of matted, nasty looking fur around his grease gland. I would be able to clean it, and he is OK with me touching it, but he absolutely DESPISES being bathed. He was a neurotic, traumatic mess last time I tried. He wouldn't be in the water for more than 5 seconds at once and it was horrible to have to put him through it.
Does anyone have any advice on how to clean up this adorable little bundle of fur (who is currently licking my thumbs as I type this on my phone!)

I have this problem with my boy Stan, he hates being bathed too, and his gland is very active at the moment.

I sit and work swarfega into his hair for about ten to fifteen minutes and then just try a bum bath, and repeat if necessary, it works for him.

Have checked him today and he needs doing again, but shhhhh dont tell him!

Swarfega? I have heard of it but wouldn't know where to get it from! How would you use it on a little piggie?

My advice would be:

- Get him comfy on your lap on a towel (you'll likely get a bit wet), facing one of your hips so he's safe and can't run off. You might want to hold him close with your forearm and hand under him.

- Dampen your fingertips in a pea sized amount of washing-up liquid (doesn't matter which one) in a cup of warm water and then rub his gland thoroughly, adding more liquid if its not lathering up enough (you'll only need a little though).

- Comb down his gland slowly because it'll likely pull and hurt him if its matted that badly. Keep the area wet and soapy enough, still rubbing and scratching with your fingertips to loosen it, and then combing the mucky fur away.

- If its really matted badly, you may have to cut the fur back and clean it thoroughly as stated above.

Don't worry if he starts kicking up a fuss and squealing slightly, its completely understandable it will hurt and he won't want it being done, but putting our own emotions aside, for his well-being it needs doing as efficiently as possible.

Hope that helps :)
