Hi all

I’m still struggling with Winnie and her bloat issue.
She was quite uncomfortable today when being examined.
I’ve been told to stop the emeprid and start her on Maropitant once a day, 1/4 tablet crushed into syringe feed.
Has anyone had any luck with this?

She’s also got ovarian cysts which don’t seem to be helping 😬

Also any advice on how to cut the tiny tablet into a quarter would be greatly appreciated 😅

Hi!

I haven't come across maropitant yet. You may find more information under the brand name cerenia (the active ingredient is maropitant citrate). It has been specially developed as a motion sickness and vomiting medication (although rodents don't have a vomiting reflex).

As to cutting tablet - a pill cutter from a pharmacy or online will help. Alternatively, grind the pill in a mortar and then mix with an amount of water that is divisible by 4 (like 2 or 4ml of water). A small vet medication bottle is very handy for the job. Shake well before use and keep in the fridge until the next day. Then repeat...

All the best!

thank you, ill pop over to Boots after work.
Another name for it is Cerenia - mainly used in dogs. she said they havent used it a ton in guinea pigs, but we have had no luck with emeprid or cisapride so fingers doubly crossed that this helps x

Just looked it up myself. I hope that a member with more medications knowledge than I can help.

It's an antiemetic - I've seen it used for travel sickness in dogs but no experience whatever of it being used in Guinea pigs.

It is certainly safe for guinea pigs and rabbits, with a huge safety margin on the dosing so you neednt worry if your pill cutting is a bit off.
Nobody is quite sure exactly how it works in animals that cant vomit- it is an anti-emetic in dogs and cats to stop them being sick- but it is thought to perhaps stop painful gut spasms. Well worth a try if the usual drugs don't work!

Thank you!
Can this be given with fibreplex and loxicom? I forgot to ask 🙈

Just given her first dose without any other meds. She was lapping it up! Crushed and Mixed in critical care.
I was trying to syringe but she was ripping it off my hand and looking for the bowl 🤣

Sadly doesn’t seem to be helping at all.
I’ve even been syringing some pro c for the last 3 days, morning afternoon and evening 5ml a time, still not noticing much difference. Sometimes they seem firm, then I’ll check later and they are soft again (could of been the veg she had)
I did take her off veg for a few days but that made no difference.
Running out of ideas :/ she is still sore when touching her belly :(
Pics are probably the better looking ones, also some have a ridge like somethings wrapped around them.
I’m out of ideas now 🙈
