I've had to see a vet I don't normally see and she's prescribed the following to my piggy Hope. I know the antibiotic is safe for pigs but I can't find info on giving injectable solution orally, and it seems a big dose.

4.2 x Marbocyl 2% injection
0.6ml once a day for seven days

Hope is 750g. She has had her first two doses by injection and now I need to start oral.

Thank you.

What was she prescribed it for?

If you have any queries about the dose please speak to the vet who prescribed. My piggies have in the past had marbocyl injected and also orally.

Hi and welcome

Marbocyl is a safe antibiotic for guinea pigs; it is related to baytril. The dosage is not out of order for a once daily dose.
You can ring up the clinic and ask whether you could split the dose and give half every 12 hours; it is your right to confirm or question any dosage if you have any worries or have been unable to take everything in your vet has told you in the post examination talk.

What is it used against? This may play a role why your vets is going to the upper limit of what they can prescribe and why they prefer to give all of it at once every 24 hours rather than splitting the dose and give it twice a day.

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure this isn't way off the mark. This vet isn't in today and I didn't really check yesterday as I was preoccupied with losing another piggy with sudden illness 😢. I'll give as prescribed today, I'm seeing her tomorrow morning. She has a sensitive tummy so I'm hoping she tolerates it okay. 🤞🏼

She presented on Sunday with breathlessness and a very swollen fluid filled abdomen (not bloat). Vet treated with a diuretic, HCG injection and this antibiotic. She believes the swelling was mostly an ovarian cyst which had suddenly filled up. There was slight sounds of pulmonary odema even though xray not too bad. She improved considerably after first doses of meds, seems the diuretic helped with the cyst as very quick for HCG to work. She has a bladder stone and was due surgery on Monday (under her usual vet who had to cancel Monday's appointment and go home to isolate) but these other issues appeared suddenly the day before. I had to find another unknown vet to see about the swelling etc. on Monday. She obviously can't have surgery for either the stone or the cysts while she is having breathing issues. She'd been on metronidazole for UTI, which the vet swapped for Marbocyl to cover potential respiratory infection as well. Sorry that was a long story! Pigs don't do things by halves!

Thanks for your response.

I do think it works much better by injection. Would you be willing to inject?

I think I would, or since I'm using a local vet I could pop her round each day, though not sure how much it's doing as her breathing has got worse today and her pee more red. Metronidazole seemed to work better on her chronic UTI.

We’ve used a combination of metronidazole and Marbocyl, but that was to treat an abscess x

Hi all, I have another query about Hope and marbocyl but it's a different issue, I'll ask here but let me know if I should start a new thread.

The vet today thinks her respiratory issue is on the mend. She's still needing Libeo to keep the fluid down and now on a second antibiotic. I told her today I felt she was declining, because she's very wobbly on her feet and seems disorientated. Vet didn't say anything about this, she's not seeing her moving around like I am. Well since her appointment earlier today I've started wondering if the high dose of marbocyl is causing neurological side effects. I've read it can cause difficulty walking and incoordination. I wish I'd thought to ask about this at the vet but I thought it was her illness getting worse. She's on 0.6ml marbocyl 2% inj orally once daily, she's 750g. I've noticed since her dose this afternoon she's got worse, and wasn't as bad before then (which was when she was at the vet). So it seems very likely it is a side effect.

So my question is has anyone else noticed this side effect in any piggy on marbocyl? I'm actually hoping it is and not some other illness. I've been feeling like I was losing her. She's eating and drinking okay but is out and about gradually less and less so has a little weight loss as a result.

Many thanks to you all for your help.

I've never used the injectable, as an oral med, so can't really comment, but have always found Marbocyl is very well tolerated by all the piggies I have had on it.
This is what we use, dosed at 1 tablet per day.

What sort of weight is that dosing for? A kg? Abi mentioned the dosing they usually use is 0.5ml of inj per kg so I guess 0.5ml is same or close to 5mg tablet. This means Hope is on almost twice that. She said a high dose can be used but I have a feeling it's a bit much for her.

Simon prescribes 1 tablet for those from around 750g to over a kilo, so it does sound like your piggy is on a high dose.
