New Born Pup
Hi all,
I wanted to see if I could get some advice.
I noticed that my pigs were scratching a bit too intense and that the older pig had something like a bold patch forming. As I suspected mites I took him to the vet asap. I explained that I suspected that it was mange mites as there was a V shape forming on his back and the aggressive biting and scratching. I have another guinea pig, 4 months old now or so and she asked if both were scratching and I said yes so she was confident it is mange indeed. She advised the Xeno 450 treatment (ivermectin) as I expected which is great. She also advised daily cleaning of everything in the cage. We threw out their edible tunnels and wood accessories and toys and we washed the rest daily or put them in the microwave (bowls and a plastic igloo). We gave them their first dose the next day and the scratching was getting better with each day. However, around the 6/7 day after the first dose, I noticed a lot of scratching and hair loss in my younger guinea pig too which worries me quite a bit. Also, we suspected there may have been something wrong with the hay so we changed the source after we noticed the increase in scratching. I gave them their second dose two days ago and the itching has reduced again.
Do you think it is possible that the eggs hatched a bit earlier than what was the expected 10-day period? Do you think there is something that I am missing? The vet prescribed 10 drops for my younger pig based on his weight. We are currently applying the medicine on the skin, so I am also worried about whether it is absorbed properly.
Thanks,
Victoria
