Hi all,

I wanted to see if I could get some advice.

I noticed that my pigs were scratching a bit too intense and that the older pig had something like a bold patch forming. As I suspected mites I took him to the vet asap. I explained that I suspected that it was mange mites as there was a V shape forming on his back and the aggressive biting and scratching. I have another guinea pig, 4 months old now or so and she asked if both were scratching and I said yes so she was confident it is mange indeed. She advised the Xeno 450 treatment (ivermectin) as I expected which is great. She also advised daily cleaning of everything in the cage. We threw out their edible tunnels and wood accessories and toys and we washed the rest daily or put them in the microwave (bowls and a plastic igloo). We gave them their first dose the next day and the scratching was getting better with each day. However, around the 6/7 day after the first dose, I noticed a lot of scratching and hair loss in my younger guinea pig too which worries me quite a bit. Also, we suspected there may have been something wrong with the hay so we changed the source after we noticed the increase in scratching. I gave them their second dose two days ago and the itching has reduced again.

Do you think it is possible that the eggs hatched a bit earlier than what was the expected 10-day period? Do you think there is something that I am missing? The vet prescribed 10 drops for my younger pig based on his weight. We are currently applying the medicine on the skin, so I am also worried about whether it is absorbed properly.

Thanks,
Victoria

Unfortunately with mange mites the scratching usually gets worse before it gets better.
The mites die off under the skin which makes the guineas itch & scratch more for a few days.

Keep to the dosage instructions of Xeno that you've been doing.

I think when my Squiggle had them she needed 3x doses of Xeno450 one for the initial mites, one approx a week later to kill any newly hatched youngsters & a final one approx another week later to kill any stragglers.

I treated all 4 of my guineas at the time, but only Squiggle seemed to suffer with them.
It was after a fungal bout & I guess Squiggle was more susceptible to them as the mites are usually opportunistic.
She had the telltale 'v' on her coat too.

Hope you can get on top of it quickly and speedy recovery to your little ones. Xx

Hello all,

As a follow-up question, how can I tell if the treatment worked? We gave them their third dose yesterday and they were very itchy again, which I take as there are still mange mites driving them crazy.

Thank you in advance!
