mojo

Hiya this is my first ever thread on GPF so its probably goin to be wrong but hey.
I'm waiting for my 2 new guineapigs to arrive on monday but my husbands not happy, he thinks they will stink alot which i know is not true but he wont listen to me,
what safe ways are there to mask any little smells they might make?
or anyways to make my hubby understand that they are lovely animals that dont smell bad?

Clean

I have my Guineas Bedded on Fleece with there Hay in a rack above a litter tray with wood pellets and newspaper in it....it gets changed regulary so there is no time for any smells to start lingering.

However I have noticed in the past before I had this set up - that when piggy wee gets onto hay its does tend to have a bit of a whiff to it.

So... my advice would be to have hay either in racks where they can reach up to nibble but not actually sit and wee in it.. or to have the hay in a litter tray (depending on how big your piggy house is) and they if they do sit and wee in it you can change it straight away without having to change the whole thing...

Hope this helps.. I find that with regular cleaning and a monthly bath of the piggys there wont be any bad smells.

tell your OH he probably smells more than they do! :p

Hello and welcome to the forum. :))

Well i am new to piggys and have had my boys for over a year now and i can tell you that they definalty dont smell! Mine live in my living room and i have tired 4 types of bedding sawdust, carefresh, megazorb and fleece. I have found that fleece is the least smelliest and i only tried it last Saturday and I'm so pleased with it!

As long as you spot clean the cage of any poo or wet areas if your using any bedding other than fleece they shouldn't smell. When mine were on megazorb their was a distinctive smell of the megazorb but it didnt smell because of the pigs, it was just the normal smell of the megazorb.

The hay can smell abit if they wee on it but as long as you change it daily if they do you shouldn't have any smells.

You can also bath your piggys every month or every 2 months depending on how dirty they get and this will help to cure any smells.

But overall as long as you keep the clean they wont smell at all. :)

Welcome to the forum! My herd of 3 live in my lounge and they do not smell unless i leave their litter tray too long between cleans but i am relatively lucky as mine are mostly litter trained. I think there is a tendency for boars to smell more than girls... As long as you clean their cage regularly there should be no problem!

Piggies do smell if you don't clean them out enough. I also use litter trays which sit under the hay racks and catch alot (but not all) of the poo and wee. These get changed daily.

The rest of the cage is covered in fleece - this gets swept up every day at least once.

This keeps smells down.

I think very regular cleaning will be the key.

Boys can smell if they have a hormonal surge of testosterone and are spraying their hormone-laden pee all over.

However, they don't do it all the time, and mostly it is enough to keep the cage clean and changed regularly - especially the toilet areas!

cleaning is important but also the type of bedding can make a difference
mine are outside in a shed but still i take care to ensure they are clean and comfy

wood shavings and hay stays fresher longer athan shredded paper and shavings and hay

i would make sure you take hubby with you to pick the piggies

let him bond with them and if that does not work

remind him how bad he smells and let him know he can be replaced

*kidding* well kind of

my OH used to moan about the smell, but i just used to ignore him! or tell him to bog off - he wasn't a great fan of GPS when I first got them, but now he talks to them as if they are very small babies and i am sure he likes them now! The only smell I can smell is when their bedding is due to be washed and then I empty the houses and wash all the bedding anyway.

I've had my piggies since Sunday and haven't cleaned them out yet due to other problems but they don't smell at the moment.
I have been regularly taking poos out though.

cheers :D

thanks for ** help everyone really good advice :D i have a hay rack an they will be using fleece so hopefully he wont have anything to worry about hes just not used to having pets in the house but living with me hel get used to it i love animals and plan to have a house resembeling a small zoo :D
babys arriving today! cant wait will get pictures on here as soon as i can
thanks again all xxxxx:)):))

My Other Half thinks exactly the same thing, he thinks Guinea pigs are dirty and smelly, i think i've convinced him otherwise as i've explained how i will be looking after them. All pets will smell if you don't look after them- cats pee in litter trays and dogs always smell unless they are bathed often. So as far as i'm concerned a bit of daily cleaning isn't that bad and that unmanagable!

I'm sure he'll fall in love with them as soon as they're home and forget all this smelly nonsense :(|). Can't wait to see them.

men smell far worse than piggies ever could :)) least piggies dont fart :)

thats true :)p:)p i never knew how much till he moved out :)p now its girly smells all the way lol well apart from my boys but they've not long had a bath so smell nice plus they get their fleeces next week decide that the fleece left over i'm going to make some little pillows for them! i'm such a piggie slave
