We just took my male guinea pig (2 years old) to the vet and found out he has a tumor on his right mammary gland. The vet said it's most likely benign and he prescribed medicines for 3 weeks and see if it will reduce else he'll proceed with surgery.

This is my first guinea pig who's had this problem. What can I expect in the next few weeks? Other than the eating and activity are there any signs I should watch out for? Is there anything I can help to help him in the recovery process?

I'm sorry your piggy has a timour, I hope that your vet is right that it is benign.
I had a piggy (a sow) who developed a mammary lump. My local vet assumed it was a tumour and that there was nothing that could be done. I took her to a more specialist vet, who disagreed, and the lump was surgically removed. I had the lump checked and it turned out not to be a tumour but a different sort of benign growth.

I don't know what is likely to happen for your piggy, but I expect the mass will continue to grow. I don't know if medication can reduce them - what medication has he been given?

Sending your boy lots of healing vibes 💓

My Bill had a mammary tumour. he was operation on that day and had no further issues. Good luck I hope it’s benign 🤞These tumours can grow and grow so it’s best to have them removed if at all possible

Have you had experience with older guinea pigs having the removal surgery? I am going through this now with my 8 year old boar.

Hi and welcome

Can you please start your own ongoing support thread in our Health/Illness section. We specialise in giving personalised support for as long as needed but this doesn't work when there are several cases discussed in a thread.

Your own new thread will deal with all the questions and concerns connected to your personal case and with evaluating your options to help you with making the decision that feels best for you and it will remain available for you during any operation or alternatives; whichever way you feel is the best way forward for as long as needed. :)

Here is the link. The thread starter button is on the right.
