Took my two boys to the vets Wednesday for castration, they both have not recovered from the procedure. Today one had to be put to sleep and not looking good for my other one. I am heartbroken, how can this happen. Has anyone else experienced anything like this

I’m so sorry for your loss. Did the vet say why they thought it beat to out him to sleep? ☹️ And B what have they said is wrong with your other boar?

Fingers crossed that he pulls through.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Such an awful shock for you. Did they not recover from the anaesthetic? Or were they ok and then took a turn for the worst? I really hope you piggy recovers 🤞

I am so sorry for your loss and the difficulties you are experiencing. Have the vets been able to shed any light on what has happened?

Hi

BIG HUGS

I am so, so sorry for your absolute nightmare.

Fatalities in boar neutering ops has gone down quite a lot over the last decade; they still happen but are much less common. Finding a good piggy operating vet is still crucial, though.

It rather sounds like something has gone wrong with either the GA or a operating vet/recovery nursing mistake to me. How experienced are your vets with operating on guinea pigs and with neutering?
Did they say what they suspect has been gone wrong? You can ask for a post-mortem to be done. I am sure that they want some answers themselves as it is every vet's nightmare, too.

Have the boys come home to you after the op or have they been staying at clinic because they struggled with the recovery?

Hi

Vet said they has never lost one yet and did not no what had gone wrong and followed procedures.

The boys stayed in overnight because it was standard practice. I went collect them and they were both out of which I thought was the anaesthetic, getting them home they were both lifeless having been told on the phone they were doing what guinea pigs do.

The vet phoned today and came round with more medication of their own accord......

My second boy died in my arms a few hours a go and is buried next to his brother in my garden

I will never get the answer as to what happened but I agree that a mistake has been made 😕

That sounds like an anaesthesia issue to me. I've only had one piggy put under for a procedure. It wasn't a surgery, but she was put fully under, and she was fully awake a couple hours after when we were picking her up. Lifeless does not sound normal, especially the next day. Were they their normal temperature when you brought them home? Guinea pigs run the risk of losing temperature during and after anaesthesia. The anaesthesia may also have exasperated an underlying condition; if they were brothers, it might have been genetic.

I'm so sorry that you lost your piggies. It's never easy losing a pet, but I know it can be harder when it feels like they were taken too soon.

I'm so, so sorry. What a horrible thing to have happen! I do agree that it's not 'doing what guinea pigs do' to have them be so out of it after an operation (particularly the day after.) I have no neutering experience (only sows here), but I have had piggies anesthetized for surgery and none of them were lifeless or floppy upon discharge... most were completely normal, one who had quite a lot of pain meds on board was kind of spaced out but was on her feet and eating normally. I can't say what went wrong, but it sounds like it was something... I'm so sorry this happened to your boys.

I’m so sorry you lost your second boy. Please do take good care of yourself, it’s a difficult time for you. Just remember you did the very best for them that you could. Lots of hugs.
