Hi I'm new here and i got a 8/9month male guinea pig as a present from Pets At Home (yes i know their bad but my dad got him as a present) and well i am currently studying animal management and know alot of the basics! But hes my second guinea pig ive ever owned and hes completely different! He sleeps alot and doesnt run around as much as my other fello did! And I'm a little concerned! He eats perfectly and drinks.. So i don't know what the problem could be! Ive heard terrible stories of introducing males to males and how it can go wrong and i would hate to chance that and put any piggys in danger! so a little advice would be brilliant!
Thanks guys!

hi
lots of rescue would allow you to take your boy along with you to find a compatable male friend, the other option is to get him neutered but there are boys that will live together you just need to provide them with plenty of space and 2 of everything :)

Agree with Petcrazy.
I got my 2 boars from Pets at home mallethead That was before I was on this forum and knew nothing about rescues. But my Pets at home wouldnt let them go unless they were in pairs. There was a big poster up saying Guinea pigs need another pigs company, and a price for buying a pair of pigs.
Anyway mine went through the dominance stage and they had some scuffly moments, but thats all settled down now. They are about 14 months old.

I have a massive c&c to give them their space, tunnels, several hayboxes, several of everything.
If anything happened to one of them I would either have the lonesome one neutered and find him some lady friends or intoduce a baby boar. However once the baby is maturing you have to remember there could be some dominace issues.

I would find some lovely person on here who deals with rescues to advise you and help you more. I think it would be a shame if you didnt try and find him a friend. But you obviously would have to make sure you had enough living space for them too.

I would get him a friend, he may be eating and drinking but his sleeping and not doing much may be down to him being depressed.

I have 13 male pigs and aside from two who have had issues from a long time and are seperated waiting for new friends all of mine are in pairs and i even have a trio and i have no issues.
a baby boar would be best and rescues are great with helping to pair them

the best way to find your boy a friend is to contact a rescue, so you can pair him up with a baby boy. How old is your own lad? Age is an important factor when pairing up boars.

Boars go through a very hormonal stage which lasts from 3-15 months, but is usually at its worst at around 4-6 months. If you stagger the ages, fights for dominance are less likely and you will only have one boy going hormonal at any given time.

The other key to successfully keeping boars is PLENTY of space!

I am sure that your boy will become a lot happier and livelier with a friend!

I have just introduced a 5/6 week old baby boar to a boar who is about 1 year old. So far no problems, though it is less than a week! I contacted a local(ish) rescue and took Ben there to meet his new friend.

Thanks for your replies!
Well I'm from Northern Ireland and have been looking for small animal rescues and have had no luck! Ireland is out of bounds for me as i cannot travel that far with no transport!
Also i would be very afraid to purchase a baby boar from P@H again and then need to seperate them, as i wouldnt have enough space for two! But his cage is currently around 9ft long he has a pen which is strectched across my room and he has more than enough space, i don't agree with the size of most petstore cages so i know two would fit perfectly in there! But i really don't want to seperate them as I'm living at home and mother wouldnt be too happy about making another large pen! lol
Thanks x

Also, when i got him he was alone in a pen with no friends, and the guy told me he was aggressive before to others when his brother got purchased... so i don't clearly know his history. I have introduced many rats before with no problem but i havnt got much experiance with piggers! lol
