hello. yesterday i unfortunately lost one of my guinea pigs. the other is doing ok, he seems much more reserved but is still eating and drinking well so i am not too concerned however this is the first time i’ve had guinea pigs so i’ve never dealt with taking care of a pig after a loss of their best friend. i’m very scared of anything happening to him especially since i read online guinea pigs can die of loneliness and grief. how do i make sure he’s ok after the loss of his freind? getting a new guinea pig is not something i can do right now, however if that is the only option i will find a way to make that work. also i am starting school tomorrow and i’m very nervous about leaving him alone after this.is there anything i can do to make sure he’s ok while i’m away at school?

also! right now i am holding him and he is wheeking and acting more himself - he doesn’t seem depressed. wasn’t sure if that’s change any replies but figured i’d add

I'm sorry for your loss.

Guinea Pigs do grieve when they lose their companion but mostly they cope ok. Acute pining (severe depression) is rare.
You have a period of a few weeks to find him a new friend. Being alone long term will cause him to become lonely.
Ensure you stick to the routine weekly weight checks so you can be sure he is eating enough while he is by himself.

The guide below will help further

Looking After a Bereaved Guinea Pig

They do vary in how they cope but if he was really pining you would know. If he's going to be alone for long periods of the day while you are at school make sure there is somewhere covered he can hide and feel safe in case there is a loud noise like a dog barking or traffic suddenly honking outside. They don't always like the radio on - they certainly don't like loud noises. They will get to know your routine... mine have just been going nuts for the grass hubs brings home each morning because they usually have it by this time of day. Unusually I am alone in the house for a couple days and I had an online exercise class. Although it's once a week they are usually munching while I'm jumping around and you can tell they are outraged because things are in the wrong order!

Long term a compatible friend is the surest way to happiness 💕

So sorry you lost one of your piggies x
Perhaps you can email a few rescues and see if they will offer bonding for your bereaved boar, that way he can choose who he wants to be with. the Guineapig Lynx website has a list of good rescues list in the US
