I have finally managed to buy some cube mesh/grids - think I got myself a bargain too. 2 boxes of 4 cubes for £20! Now, I just need to get my hands on Correx and I'm ready to go. So, can't wait - the girls have desperately been needing a new home for ages.

My question is: what kinds of bedding are most popular in C&Cs? Is it fleece?

In their current Nero cage they have a layer of newspaper, Megazorb and then hay but not sure if this would be practicle in a C&C.

If you and the girls like the megazorb there's no reason to swich from it, just make the correx go up a little higher to keep the stuff in :)

I swear by fleece (used it for years) and inco pads (new discovery) but I know others don't.

I also used megazorb in my nero 4 cage, but now i have a c&c cage i use fleece and inco pads, they work great and i still use the megazorb in the hayloft. I use newspaper, megazorb and hay in the hayloft and just the fleece and inco pads down the bottom of the c&c. :)

But i wouldnt see why you couldn't use the megazorb in the whole of your c&c?

:)

Thank you.

I like the idea of fleece as it sounds like it wouldn't be so messy for cleaning out - not heard of inco pads, will look them up and have a look at them. They won't have a hayloft to begin with, just the one level but I would be putting in a hay area for them if I use fleece (as well as still having their rack). Eventually I will make it bigger for them and have another level.

I agree, if you want to carry on using megazorb (I can see no reason why you can't) then you would just need to make the sides a bit higher than if you were to use fleece to stop it being kicked over the edge.

Thank you.

I (and I believe many other people) got my inco pads from Coastal Linen Supplies Ltd, through amazon.co.uk (example; http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000MES1W8/ref=ox_ya_oh_product You will have to copy and paste this red bit into your browser to see, I can't seem to get it to do an auto link to amazon for some reason) - It is for underneath the fleece, instead of towels. Because they absorb so much liquid (up to 3 litres I think) and can be washed at very high temps, I think that they are more hygenic than towels and/or newspaper. They are quite expensive, but I think worth it. No smell. I found with towels, if they pulled the fleece off of the towels, it really stunk! But if they were good and left them tucked over, it held the smell in. So far, they haven't pulled the fleece off of the inco pads, even though they are only just tucked under at the ends of the cage.

The only downside to fleece is the washing. And if your washing machine breaks down, you'll be doing it by hand (or switching to megazorb!)

Hi,
I too am looking at all the materials to build my two boys a C&C cage - just out of interest - where did you buy your grids? Cheapest i can find them at is £14.85 for 4 cubes (17 grids) - and as ill be doing a two storey 6x3 lower and 3x3 upper i need at least 3 packs, a total cost including shipping of £50.50.

Ive sourced some correx which will cost me around £32.00 - but this is for 10 x 8ft x 4ft 2mm sheets (minimum order is 10) - delivery is included in the price also.

A quick question: the inco pads you mentioned with the amazon link - do you just use one layer? I think for the money it'd work out far cheaper than washing and drying three layers of towels 1-2 times per week.

I wish you luck with you cage - be nice to see some pics when it's finished :)

Yep, just one layer! They are used for people with continence problems for overnight, so absorb a LOT of liquid and are hygenic. I think they can be washed up to 95 degrees.

I only change the cages once every week. Well, I think I'm on about every 6 days at the mo. Change the fleece twice during that time.

My initial outlay was a lot, because I wanted two sets (one for washing and one for drying), which now means I don't use the tumble dryer for the piggie stuff as I was previously putting the towels in to dry. I bought 8 pads in the link I posted (two for each cage x 2 sets) then I bought 6 smaller chair size pads (one for each loft once I've completed them x 2 sets plus 2 extra for lap time as don't want them weeing on me or my bf! :{) so all together I paid about £100 I think :{:{ Which is crazy. But then I have two cages, it is a lot less washing, less electric for tumble drying (although they CAN go in the dryer), they don't smell. Also, it should also be pointed out, they last for 200 washes, so at once a week, the two sets will last me 7.5-8 years. So really.... When you put it all into perspective, I personally think they are worth it.

AND, if you have a dryer, you could be really organised and have the pigs in a run whilst you wash and dry the bedding and put them back into a nice clean cage without the need for a second set. I'm just not that organised!

I had a C&C before my cages I have now, I got my packs from eBay and 2 inc P&P cost me £40. Most eBayers will sell a few packs at no or little extra P&P, but always check before buying!

If you have a CostCo near you and you don't mind the yearly membership fee, they sell packs for about £12 I think. And they sell lots of other things worth making the membership fee worth while. I didn't have one near to me though, so I bought from eBay.

ALSO! I forgot to add.... Coastal Linen only charged me £5 for ALL my inco pads. It isn't £5 per pad or anything silly. I was going to buy direct from their site, but they added VAT at the end, where as on amazon they are the price stated on the link, so actually worked out cheaper to buy through amazon than directly.

I got the grids in Costco today - didn't look like they were on offer either, it looked like it was their normal price but I've never seen them in there before. The £10 each included the VAT. Kinda wishing now that I'd bought another pack - might pop back to get one so I can put in another storey. Was in Ikea today too but that was before Costco or I coulda got cheap fleece in there too. rolleyes

Will definitely have pictures to show you all once it's all set up. I so can't wait to see their wee faces when they see all the space they've got.

Thanks for the info re. the inco pads and the C&C grids.

Ive just had a look at the costco website and there is a costco near me - but if i add the cost of travel (as i don't drive) plus the £20.00 membership fee - i think it'd work out more expensive for me - plus i'm not so sure i could carry 12+ KG back home on public transport.

It's a shame i don't know anyone with a membership who could get them for me, still it's always the way when you don't drive - everything is just so far that you end up paying the most amount of money to have stuff delivered.

My problem is that if i pay the membership fee i doubt i'll ever visit the place again.

Useful info though for those that might find it a cheaper option. :))

Aw, thats a shame that you don't know anyone. I went with my Mum as she has a card. I'm like you, it isn't worthwhile me getting my own card - I don't tend to buy things in huge bulk as there's only me and I've no space in my flat to store lots of things.

Where do you live? I have a costco membership.

I live in Oldbury in the West Midlands - not too far from Dudley - but i can see from your profile that you live in Milton Keynes. I really appreciate the offer though, very kind of you :))

In the past ive been a member of a couple of warehouses and paid the yearly fee, however i found that after a few months i never visit them - and when i did i only ever bough 1 or 2 items - that's the problem, i couldn't see me making use of the membership once i'd bought the grids.

I really appreciate the offer of help, but i think it's gonna be online shopping for me - either way my piggies will get the home the deserve - even if it does cost me a small fortune.... inbreeding

There might be someone more local to you with a membership, but if not, although it is a lot of money to buy from the internet, when you cost the whole thing together and consider the size of their soon to be humble abode, it isn't actually that much in comparision to store bought cages :)
