Hi all, I fear this is going to be a stupid question lol (though looking back I've already asked my fair few 😂) but as some of you know my Bellamy is my first longhaired piggy and a Lunkarya.

I already keep his locks free of debris (the amount of hay and pellets he accumulates in there is honestly staggering!😂) Mainly using my fingers and then a comb. However now it's warmed up I'm questioning trimming? His back end is already short and has never really gotten to the same length as his top, so is that okay? I feel as though a trim everywhere would lessen the heat but I can only ever find videos on Shelties or Peruvians getting a haircut so I can't determine whether this breed is meant to be cut. Obviously I'm not planning on shaving the guy, just cut it shorter.

Many thanks.

Pictures are more because he's bloomin gorgeous (might be biased) and I'm sure you'll all appreciate them haha.

He is gorgeous I trimmed Willow's hair during the summer he was with us, he was a Texel, a similar hair to a Lunky I believe. I am sure Bellamy would appreciate losing some of that coat now the weather is hotting up! I can't see trimming him would hurt, their hair soon grows back.

I have 2 lunkarya piggies,in the summer i cut there hair short,as they are prone to fungal infections and dry skin.also overheat with too much hair.its like us wearing a sheepskin coat in the middle of summer.there hair is very harsh in texture therefore it stands away from the skin.it collects everything.your piggie is stunning.

Thank you all for your replies! Looks like Bellamy will be getting a haircut today then 😁 I'll have to post a picture once I've hacked some off bless him.

Well it's done 😭 my poor boys locks! But he must feel a tonne better. Just put him and Steve in the bath and away I went. Used my clippers to get it done a little quicker and not stress him out as much. It's by no means neat and there's a few long ends -sorry Bellamy 😂- but I'm glad he's gonna be cooler over this hot weekend. I'll have to attach pictures of his do a little later on as I'm letting him recover 🤣. He looks so small now.

Looking good! He won't mind if you have left a few long bits. All he'll know is that he feels a lot cooler! Could you make another piggy out of the hair you chopped off? :lol!:

Omg 😂😂😂😂😂 the amount of hair I got off was incredible. Filled a good 80% of a carrier bag. In the end I had to remove Steve because he was getting lost under the hair- knowing him he thought it was some exotic hay lol.

Hi! Get some small dog clippers and give your boy a real shorthair cut right down to the length of short-hair piggies.
He will thank you for it! By autumn, the hair will have grown back in all its old glory.

You are welcome to post before and after pictures to @Betsy , who is collecting material for our hair care guide.

We are sadly very thin on long-haired rexoid breeds on the forum; because they are the most labour intensive in terms of grooming and maintenance with fur that just soaks up any pee like a sponge, they are not all that popular outside breeding circles.

He is a very gorgeous boy in summer shorts and winter coat!

I did this to my lunkary breed before she passed away, miss her so much
When it was hot ! Just cut it like this, but she was trying to help me be a dog groomer but i haven't got any hope in becoming a dog groomer because I will not talk face to face to people View attachment 116785
Oh she was stunning! Her hair was amazing! 😍 I get the talking face to face thing 🤣 I'm the same it is a struggle but since getting a small job in retail my confidence has boosted. Yep I used the dogs clippers on my boy and he was surprisingly ok with them I thought the noise my freak him out, but thankfully be seemed rather chill. Well as chill as Bellamy ever is🤣🤣

I use Pet Clippers for Betsy. I can't find the ones I use anymore. They are Just4Pets clippers.

The clippers I use (Which @VickiA has linked above) are fab, I do all my piggy and dog trimming needs with them :)

Are you doing a special guide on hair care @Betsy ?
That's brilliant news. I shall look forward to your special care thread.

You can come and practice on Priscilla again if you want to.
It won't be for a while what with moving and stuff. I'll do my best. I have Betsy to practise on. Hopefully when I can find someone to video it I shall have a video of doing a bum trim and an all over summer fur do.
