My 4 year old guinea pig boar, Mavis, has a very random lump on the side of her face, it appeared in a day. She has lost quite a lot of weight over the last 5-6 weeks, but just put it down to her getting older. Now looking up about cancerous tumours, but just didn’t know if it is a cyst or abscess, I was just hoping for a little help and/or advice on what to do with her.

Welcome to the forum

Any lump needs a hands on check by a vet so please do have her seen.

With regard to the weight loss, it’s best if you can switch to weighing daily and step in with syringe feeding either a recovery feed such as critical care, or in the absence of a recovery feed, use her normal pellets but mush them up with water. Weighing daily will enable you to monitor that she is getting enough food. The guides below will help further

I hope she is ok

Thank you for advice, going to book an appointment with the vet tomorrow, thank you again!

Hi!

Please see a vet and step in with syringe feeding support asap. Any large weight loss needs to be vet checked, whatever the age. We can only guess as to the nature of the lump but you may be more likely dealing with dental root abscess because they are often painful (loss of appetite) some time before they come up.

Take the time to read our support care links. Your home support is as important as any vet care to get your girl through this.

When our Harry had a lump suddenly appear I panicked and it turned out just to be an abscess.
The vet opened it for me and I kept flushing it and he was on antibiotics for a few weeks, but made a full recovery.
So not all lumps are bad - some really can be treated quite easily.
