We rescued a gorgeous boar piggy a year ago, he had a few benign lumps when we took him on. Since then a lump on his stomach is too big & nearly touches the floor when he walks. We would like a confident vet to give removing it a go, but we keep being offered a lump biopsy first (2 different local practices that don’t specialise in small animals) - the vets don’t seem keen to operate. Does anyone know of a good, guinea pig confident vet we could try in Herts/Bucks?

He is fat (1.4kgs), healthy, happy & jumps around the place. Both our piggies live freely in our house & are big parts of our children’s lives. So we are finding the ‘what next’ decision a bit emotional.

Sorry to hear about the history with your boar. I don’t have a clue but see the link to vet locators.

Hi!

If you can get to Northampton, then you can find one of the best piggy operating vets at the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic there. You can find in our vet locator.

I would however recommend that you check whether your boy is a healthy weight for his size or whether he is overweight; the latter can be an operation risk.
Please take the time to read our weight guide. It contains all the information on how you check the heft (BMI or individual weight/size ratio) and what you can do dietary and exercise wise. Keep in mind that the size range of piggies can vary enormously. My Pioden was bordering on underweight at 1400g because he is huge whereas my Hywel was definitely chubby being the patriarch of 13 wives and getting my than his fair share at the same age.
I would especially recommend to look at the amount of pellets you are feeding (1 tablespoon per piggy per day) and how much fattening/high sugar veg (especially carrot, sweet corn or fruit) you are feeding. Carrot is like a bar of chocolate for guinea pigs and rabbits. As well as treats...

I hope he's okay.

Look into Beaumont Sainsburys Animal Hospital in Camden too. They have specialists for Guinea Pigs.
