Hi folks,

I am new to the forum and need some advice. I am a fairly experienced pig keeper! My mother bought two female pigs 9 months ago. Unfortunately one of them, Ruby, died recently:... despite my intervention and vets visits. It seems she was ill when my mum got her, possibly a heart problem.
Anyway her cage-ate was looking very sorry for herself so I have bought Chocolate to keep her company. They are getting on ok and Choccy is very lively and appeared healthy. I only bought her 5 days ago but today I felt a lump under her throat, it is about the size of a cherry.
I looked up some health stuff and it could possible be an abscess caused either by 'rough hay' ( I only give her the usual pet-shop bought hay ) or teeth problem ( surely for such a young, approx. 3 month old this would not be the case?) I really don't want to take her back to the pet shop ( she has a 7 day guaruntee! ) as I am already attached, as are the kids, and what would they do with her? However, given my experience with Ruby I am concerned that I have got another sick pig!
Of course I'll take her to the vet if no change by tomorrow but just wondering if any of you have any experience of this problem?

Thanks

Depending on where it is it could be an abscess or an infection in a lymphnode; I am not a lumps specialist.

But she certainly needs to be seen by a competent vet, the sooner the better. Lumps need always to be investigated. Please be aware that if you take the little girl back to the shop you may not get her back or be sure that she won't be simply put down. It is not an easy decision for you to make!

Here is more information on lumps:

maybe go back to the shop and explain that you dont want them to have her back, just ask if they can help out with the vets fees. Fingers crossed its nothing to serious x

Under the chin, the first thing that I thought of was CL (abscess of the lymph nodes.) It's worth a vet check, since abscesses usually require vet care. Hope there is a quick fix and no more worries!

Swollen lymph nodes, which can present as a lump/lumps on the neck, can suggest infection anywhere in the body, I believe. Abscesses are common lumps in this area, but there can also be harmless lumps (fatty lipomas/fibromas) in this area too. I do feel it is worth a vet check.

Hi

As already said, it could be an abscess and their are a number of reasons why they are quite common in the throat area, or a fatty lipoma, is it soft or hard.

It could also be the thyroid gland or some form of growth (which is not always cancer).

Definatly need to see a vet for this one.

Regards

SGP

Thanks for al the responses. I will make an appointment with the vet tomorrow if there is no change. She seems fine otherwise, eating ok and running about! I will let you know how she gets on.
