So I think I've been accidently overdosing my piggie!

He was prescribed it in dec for bladder stones. He did end up having surgery. He's still on loxicom and frusol.

Back in dec he was prescribed 0.4ml of the loxicom 2x day. (1.5mg/ml dog)

I've just looked at the box and it now says 0.15 2x day! I feel sick. Hiw long has been changed for!

But I'm also doubting if it were a typo mistake as the frusol dose he has 0.15.

Could i have some thoughts on it please. Have I been overdosing or a mistake?

I feel so bad!

Also I only looked cuz my mil is looking after them tomorrow night. So I though I'd check it's written down for her! I could be overdosing still.

Hi

How much is your piggy weighing?

My 1kg Gethin was on a maximum 0.5 ml dog metacam for about 2 months for a brewing jaw abscess over the Christmas holidays 2019; he lived for nearly 3 years longer to the good age of 6 years. So your piggy is highly unlikely to have been overdosed unless they are very much on the small side. Guinea pigs tolerate metacam a lot better than other pet species.

Could you please specify your piggy's weight and what health issue the loxicom and frusol have been prescribed for?
You are also always within your rights to confirm dosages with the clinic if you feel confused.

Thank you for the reply.

He weighs approx 1140 to 1180g. I find it varies between these measurements even though I try to weigh at the same time of day (before dinner etc). But it does stay within that range.

He had a bladder stone and had surgery. A very big bladder stone poor thing. 😢

Vet said to keep him on loxicom and frusol as to *try* prevent reoccurrence.

I have done other things too, like added extra water bottles. Cut down on dry food. Try and give grass at lunch as a snack. Really wash their veggies and keep them wet when I give them.

Hi

The initial dosage was definitely appropriate but since he has obviously recovered well, your may have scaled down the metacam/loxicom as no longer necessary at a higher dosage. It is an analgesic but won't do anything towards the recurrance of bladder stones but it would have been there to help with any potential bladder trauma (damage to the bladder walls from the stone).
Frusol is a diuretic which makes your piggy have some stronger pees in order to help flushing the bladder out better at least once or twice a day. Bad natural drinkers are at an increased risk of bladder stones - this is something you cannot change. It is one of several factors that can contribute to stone formation. Please make sure that your water is filtered and that you only feed 1 tablespoon of pellets per piggy per day - these are the two largest angles where calcium comes into the diet. It is hwever mistake to cut out all calcium; there is a sweet spot that is different locally. Get just wrong either side and you could end up with stones if your piggy has added risk factors, like genetic disposition etc. Diet is just the only way you can do something about it. Fresh green grass is best if you have access to it; it is also high in vitamin C.
