Hello everyone. Would like some advice please. My young teddy sow Betty is limping. She has been to see the vet who has recommended that I give her metacam (5 drops) twice a day for now and to contact him later to update her progress. This seems quite a lot. Any advice welcome re dosage. Many thanks. Bee

Metacam doseage

Hi
I have had a lot of contact with my vet recently due to a sick piggie. I have the Metacam for dogs, which is 1.5mg/ml and I have been told by both vets that a piggie weighing 1kg should be given 0.7mls. As my piggie has lost weight and is currently 900gr she is receiving less at 0.5mls. I hope this helps you. This doseage should be given twice daily.

Our 3 month old teddy is on Metacam, a painkiller for cats and dogs. Our vet phoned the company and explained her weight which is 472 grams (something around that weight) and every morning has 0.15 of it in a syringe. But if it's helping her were lowering it to 0.8. So maybe ask your vet for a dosage. Lottie's having it for her teeth.

Do you mean you will be lowering it to 0.08 ml?

I've noticed recently that many vets seem to be prescribing very large doses of Metacam.

My vet, who is very guinea pig savvy, prescribes 0.1 ml twice daily.

Yes we will be lowering it.
She phoned up the company to make double sure the amounts ok. So i trust her. She's a very experienced vet- thorough. And i worked with her on work experience, she knows her stuff(:

Hi All. Thanks for all your replies. Betty is having an xray tomorrow on her leg. John the vet just wants to sure that there is no real damage. I will check with him re the dosage in mls.

Thanks again. Dont know what we would all do without this great forum.

xx

Dosage will be different depending on if it is the dog or the cat version of metacam. The cat version is a much lower concentration and so the doses for this tend to be higher (in ml terms). Loxicom is the dog version though (I think), my Pig, who is 1.1kg, was prescribed 0.2ml of the dog version (so 0.1ml every 12 hours), but I don't know how this translates in drop terms.

Good luck at the vets tomorrow.
