Hi all
My little boy pig (Flower - named by my daughter🤣) has been bitten by his hutch mate. We discovered this late last night and he had a cut to his nose and another inside his mouth. I have taken him to our local vets this aftenoon and they have prescribed Baytril Oral Suspension 2.5% (0.4ml one daily) and Loxocom 1.5mg /ml (dog version) (0.44ml once per day).
He seems ok in himself although a little sore - is still eating although slightly tentatively.
The reason for checking in is the vet origionally prescribesd 1.75ml of the dog Loxicom. Although I have never given Loxicom before this seemed a high dose - I queried it three times and had to wait in the surgery for 3/4 hour whilst the head nurse and vet checked the dose. Having twice confirmed 1.75ml was correct, they finally agreed that it was too high and reduced it to 0.4ml once daily.

I have therefore lost faith in the advice I have been given and would appreciate some confirmation that this is the correct dose for a male pig, 2 years old 1.32 kg.

Many thanks and a lesson learned. I now need to find a specialist Guinea Pig vet in Worcestershire, England!

I’m sorry you feel you were pushed this way and that. I’ve no experience with dosage for Loxicom so will not touch on that. What I wanted to say is that guinea pigs have a high metabolic rate and so need to have pain meds administered every 12 hours.

Below is the link for recommended vets. Hopefully there is one within reasonable distance.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m so sorry your boys have had a fight. Have you separated them now? My piggy of a similar weight is just recovering from a tooth root abscess. He was prescribed 0.4ml of dog Loxicom twice a day. Hope that helps. Good luck finding a good vet.

0.4ml once daily is low.

*Dosage removed by mod* split twice daily seems more accurate for his weight to me, especially if it’s short term.

Apologies I was meant to post yesterday when I edited your post but got distracted and then forgot.

While we appreciate the sharing of experience on the forum we try our best to refrain from recommending dosages. Posts on the forum are public and can be viewed by everyone, whether they are a member or not. Whilst we appreciate the OP is unlikely to use a recommended dose to treat their piggy without further vet input, it is really important that all viewers know that doses can only be prescribed by a vet. There is a risk to the forum if someone were to medicate a piggy based on advice here rather than seeking a vets opinion, especially if something bad were to happen as a result. I hope you understand why your post was edited

There's also the fact that often people have a question about one medication and omit to mention piggy is on 5 or 6 other things for various other ailments too! I've seen this several times and I've not been on here that long. Sometimes it only comes out during chit-chat a few days later. Another thing to consider is that prescription recommendations can change all the time and people looking things up in the future will see doses which might have been given several years back before formula changes or before it was found that things interact with other things. Then the legal issue of course! But I don't think we'd be in trouble for saying "My boy weighs blah, and gets blah blah twice a day for his blah" because that's just citing our own vet prescription.

A vet will have considered all these things and should have calculated accordingly but 1.75 ml of dog was a scary high dose and at the very least poor Flower would have felt awful for some time. @bellatodd I'm amazed you are so on-the-ball for that as a loxicom novice! I think someone just got their maths wrong which is worrying as they didn't pick it up on the check. Well done for persevering and hope Flower is feeling a bit better. You will likely need to split them though and keep them as bar-neighbours where they can see and smell each other through the bars but where everyone can feel safe. They won't be happy together now they've fought. Let us know how you're getting on x

I understand what you’re saying but I think you misunderstood my post as I didn’t recommend a dose, the original post mentioned the dose and I said that they maybe meant twice daily, not that huge amount at once. Hope that clears it up. I didn’t explain what I meant clearly enough so sorry about that.
