Hi,
As some of you may know we’ve been told my pig (age 7!) as heart failure. She had crackly breathing for a while and frequent coughing spells until she had two x-rays which confirmed she had something going on.

Our vet then did a quick ultrasound which let us know her heart was pumping the blood unevenly on both sides of it. This caused fluid to build up and sit on her chest which caused the coughing and the noisy breathing.

However, shes had medication for over a week and the symptoms have improved and are managing the heart failure until the end of her life. She is my baby despite her age and it is upsetting to realise she is slowing down and is not as bubbly and alert as she used to be.

Although, she has loud breathing. Not to the point where i can hear her breathing from her cage but when you hold her all you can hear is her breathing. Nothing wrong with it aside from it being very loud? I'm not sure if I am describing it well enough to say what I mean but I was never able to hear it before this.

Thanks :)

Hi

This is more likely a side effect of the heart failure and not because she has a respiratory illness. Can you see whether a bowl of steaming water helps? If yes, I would see whether the room is too dry first.

But I am glad that the meds are working and that she is noticeably better on them.

The room is actually too damp/not dry! we have dehumidifiers in here to lessen this.
