Some background info-
A few months ago I adopted 2 female guinea pigs. They are now 5-6 months old, and live in a 16 square foot enclosure. We use reusable pee pads as bedding, and sometimes use paper bedding in their litterbox. Each guinea pig gets a Vitamin C tablet daily.

Well my one of my guinea pigs, Little One (her nickname) suddenly stopped wheeking. Well, she tries to wheek, but all that comes out is a horse whisper. I was concerned at first because I thought she had a cold or a respiratory infection, but she showed (and still shows) no signs of a runny nose, watery eyes, labored breathing etc. She is a very active little piggy and loves to run around her cage at top speed, showing no signs of being injured or lethargic. She also chirps a lot, and her chirps are completely normal and at normal volume. Her purr is quiet, but you can hear it (like a whisper-purr). I haven't found much information about guinea pigs losing their wheek, and was wondering if anyone on here can help me out? Little One used to wheek normally, but the last time she REALLY wheeked was like 2 months ago, and when she did it I thought she would go back to wheeking as normal but then she resumed her whisper-wheeks. Besides her wheeking, she seems completely normal and healthy, and she interacts with her sister normally. What do you guys think?

Welcome to the forum.
It’s always wise to get a vet check to rule out any medical issues.
My Merab lost her wheek too for no apparent reason. She was also blind due to cataracts but had no trouble whatsoever communicating.
She remained top pig in the herd until her death at a bit over 6 years.
On an odd occasion she did manage a real wheek and was always surprised at herself.

We would love to see pictures of your girls

Some piggies do lose their big wheek for no apparent reason and with no further long term health implications. However, it is always better to make sure that there is no medical reason for the loss.

I have had two or three of my own, plus the odd strong silent type who would hardly ever talk even though they could make themselves heard when it really counted.

Thank you for your replies!
I really, really hope she's not sick or something because I love her and her sister so much. In the meantime I'll keep an eye on her, and see if possibly this weekend I can arrange a vet visit.

Mine havequiet days or weeks sometimes when they barely if ever wheek then they on full volume back to normal, like they just need some quiet time!
Happy that they mainly wheek just for me though 😍
