Hi everyone I hope you and your piggy’s are doing well :) my elder guinea pig (twiggy, 2 years old) Has been very irritated with me stroking her recently.I tried stroking her again today and she let me! I went to stroke her bottom and I could feel a bone sticking out. I immediately thought this was not a good thing and I weighed both of my guinea pigs. She came to 1040g. She’s eating the same as usual and doesn’t look smaller or any different. Does anybody have an suggestions or tips? I don’t know weather I’m just being over cautious/paranoid but She is my eldest big and I love her very much so I will do anything to protect her.

Over what period of time has she lost weight, and what was she previously?

I’ve only noticed to day but I haven’t been hangling them for a couple days.Unfortunately I didn’t know you were supposed to weigh them till recently so I haven’t been and I feel so bad.

That’s okay. When was it you last weighed her before seeing she’s at 1040, and what did she weigh then? It’s not something that some new owners know, so don’t feel bad. Just start now.

Thank you I remember I did weight her and her old cage mate once when Thayer we’re probably 5 months or so and she was about 900 but it’s hard to say

It's difficut to say then as it's such a long time since the last weigh-in. Please weigh weekly now and get an appointment with the vet if you're still worried.

I'll also tag in @Wiebke @Piggies&buns @VickiA

Hi!

Most new owners are not aware of the need of weekly weigh-ins and body checks as an important part of life long health monitoring. We also recommend to have your piggies' health checked at the vets at least once a year.

Please take the time to read these guides here. You will find them very helpful. The weight guide also contains a chapter where you can check whether your piggy is still a good weight for her size ('heft'). If you are worried about loss of weight, you switch from weighing weekly to weighing daily at the same time (why is in the guide).

The guides are part of our very useful new owners' guide collection, which is very wide ranging and makes a great resource for bookmarking and looking out at need. The guide format allows us to update our information at need, unlike books, which become outdated very quickly.
