So...I currently have two young females. They get on well, and have a good sized cage. (6ft by 2ft) I considered getting another bonded pair to make a little herd with, but I think I like the idea of getting my girls an altered huspig better. Is there a good age to do this at? My sows are roughly 5 months old. Would it be better to find an older boar?

Also, does anyone know of any local to Washington State rescues I might be able to arrange a bonding date with?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Hi! When you go for neutered boars, age is immaterial - mutual liking and initial acceptance are the crucial points. It is usually down to the sows to accept a boar. Your girls are at an age when there shouldn't be much of a problem with acceptance of most boars, unless one of your girls is very dominant.

My 3 year old Carwyn bonded well with my frail 7 year old Ffraid during the last months of her life but afterwards he has found happiness with 6 weeks old Heini who he is still getting on with like a house on fire after 6 months; they just clicked. Just as an example... Adult boars tend be less hormone driven than sub-adult ones, but you can look at all of them.

There is a good rescue upstate, Foggy Creek rescue in Auburn, and a relatively new rescue that seems to run to a good standard in Portland, which may be easier to reach for you depending on your location, but there is unfortunately none in the Seattle area. Sadly, good rescues are far an between in the US.Not all rescues have neutered boars.
