Hey,

We have two male guinea pigs. They are around 3 months old. We are going to buy a much bigger cage in a few days and now have room for at least one or maybe two. I am just looking for a little advice on sex and age of the new guinea pigs? what is the bets way to approach this? I am also looking to adopt; http://aprillodge.co.uk/

Thanks!

Hi! Please DO NOT add any new guinea pigs to a working boar pair. While sub-adult pairs that have not been character matched have a better than 50% chance of making it through the hormonal teenage months between 4-14 months together, the fall-out rate for trios is around 90% and for quartets 100%. It is simply not worth it!

As lovely as your present couple is and as great the temptation, the really tricky time is still ahead for them - and you may need any spare capacities in case you end up with a separation, so it would be much better to hedge your bets and rather think about adopting another pair of boars if yours have made it to adulthood as an intact pair. Otherwise, you might be rather looking at finding each a new friend of his own liking (central for any successful bond), preferably via one of our recommended piggy savvy rescues.

This is really informative! Thank you so much for your advice!
