I went on the Vet Locator and noticed that my nearest was Dunfermline. This isn't all that far away, but the Bush Small Animal Hospital of the Edinburgh University Veterinary School is a lot nearer to me (20 minutes) and would be a shorter journey. Does anyone know if there is a reason not to go there or if it is just not included because no-one knows specifically of vets there with a special interest in piggies? I don't need to visit a vet with my piggies now thankfully, but I'd like to have chosen the vet I would go to should the need arise as I would be all in a flap with worry!

It could be that no one has been there to approve it. I have used the one in Dunfermline and it has been excellent.

It is worth ringing them up and speaking to them.

I use my decent local general vets for all the run-of-the-mill stuff and emergency situations, but take my piggies to see a more experienced vet for anything that needs a special touch. Our list is not comprehensive and is constantly changing, as new vets come on the scene and experienced ones move around or retire. Vet medicine, especially when it comes to small animals and guinea pigs has made huge strides in the last few years; so much is currently in flux. Our recommended vets guide is there to help newcomers have the kind of odyssey that some of us have been on to find a knowledgeable vet within their reach, but we are always open to add new competent vets. it is often the case that a recommended vet gets to see more guinea pigs in a certain area, and this further enhances his capabilities and experience.

Our Scottish members can probably add more personal tips and experiences re. vets in your area.

Thanks, i will definitely give them a ring soon. I hope that maybe with that practice being attached to the university that perhaps there is a vet with a special research interest in piggy health. That would be ideal, though maybe wishful thinking. And so near me too so short drive for piggies which would also be my concern.

I would always keep your nearest recommended vet in mind - there are cases you really want to be sure to be in experienced hands. Guinea pigs fall unfortunately very much between the category. They are not a large part of a general vet's curriculum as they are classed as exotics, but on the other hand they are too "common" a pet for most exotic vets to specialise in them. That is why finding a piggy savvy vet can be so difficult.
PS: Guinea pigs travel pretty well. Here are our tips: Travelling with guinea pigs
