Long haired piggy not keeping clean

I have only ever had short haired guinea pigs before, but my baby Ruffle has longer hair, especially around the back end (I believe he is a aby x Peruvian).

I have noticed that he has got some poop stuck in the fur around the back end. I always assumed he would keep himself clean just like the short haired piggie but apparently not - is this normal?

I am steeling myself to bath him, but handling him sets my asthma off so I'm procrastinating at the moment. I guess it will have to be done eventually. Is he going to need regular baths? I have only ever bathed the other one once in 4 years!
 
I prefer to cut the hair at the bum end as short as possible with my two coronets. That helps a lot!
 
This might sound like a daft question but if I cut his hair, will it grow back? The short haired pig's hair never seems to grow but I'm not sure about the longer haired ones.
 
Yep it will grow back.

My long haired piggy needs washing about every 2 months. My short haired ones never do.
 
I sometimes give my peruvian a lion mane cut.. clipping his coat short up to the neck region, so he takes a lion appearance! It keeps him cool, and he really appreciates it when it's hot :)
 
mine all get a bum trim Del has this ridiculous long train of hair at the back, he used to stay clean and tidy but hes turning into a tatty boy so out came the scissors :))
 
I believe their hair grows an average of 1 inch a month, it certainly seems to with Bob! He's due a wash, cut and blow dry, luckily he doesn't seem to mind at all.
 
My long haired girls were fine until recently but one had a knot in her hair and to prevent it getting worse I just gave her a full bottom trim, the hair still falls over the top but underneath is all short and beautifully clean.
